Nickelback spent the 2000s at the top of rock radio while also becoming “the worst band in the world” meme, but that hate didn’t come out of nowhere. This video dives into Nickelback’s ugliest fights and controversies: Corey Taylor vs Chad Kroeger, Patrick Carney calling them “horrendous,” comedians turning them into a punchline, country stars clashing in Nashville, ex‑bandmates lawyering up, and even a multi‑million‑dollar insurance lawsuit. It’s the story of Nickelback vs everyone…even ex‑bandmates.

We start with the long‑running feud between Slipknot’s Corey Taylor and Chad Kroeger. Taylor blasted Nickelback as “pretty boys,” complained that their label pumped Slipknot’s money into Nickelback, and later upgraded Kroeger to “Captain Ego from Planet Douche.” Years later, Kroeger fired back in interviews by calling Stone Sour “Nickelback lite,” triggering Taylor’s legendary rants about “Planet Kroeger,” ugly‑dude polls, and Hello Kitty pillows. Other rockers piled on too. The Black Keys’ drummer Patrick Carney said rock was dying because audiences accepted Nickelback as the biggest band in the world, accused post‑grunge of “ruining” rock, and basically framed Nickelback as the symbol of everything wrong with mainstream guitar music.

The hate wasn’t just inside rock. Country circles added their own chapter when a drunk Chad Kroeger reportedly insulted Miranda Lambert at a Nashville bar, leading to a moonshine‑soaked confrontation that Blake Shelton later confirmed involved “the lead singer of a very popular rock band” with initials C.K. Depending on the source, Lambert either punched Kroeger or threw the drink in his face, but every version agrees it turned into a full bar‑room dust‑up and another ugly look for Nickelback’s frontman.

Then there’s the comedian who accidentally helped turn Nickelback into a universal meme. Metal‑loving comic Brian Posehn joked on Comedy Central’s Tough Crowd that “bad music makes people violent” and “Nickelback makes me wanna kill Nickelback.” Comedy Central lifted that line for a promo and ran it endlessly, baking “Nickelback sucks” into cable TV culture. Over time, the band became a go‑to punchline in movies, on late‑night shows, and across social media, from Royal Blood’s snarky Trump/Clinton tweet to endless Reddit threads about why “everyone hates Nickelback.”

Not all the fights were external. Inside the camp, ex‑drummer Ryan Vikedal became embroiled in a legal battle over royalties, where filings claimed Chad Kroeger as the “sole author” of Nickelback’s early songs. That reinforced the image of an ego‑driven frontman willing to diminish a former bandmate to protect money and credit. On top of that, a vocal‑cord cyst forced the band to cancel dozens of shows and triggered a $13 million dispute with insurance giant Lloyd’s of London over a pre‑existing condition, putting Kroeger’s integrity under a legal microscope.

In recent years, Nickelback’s documentary, TikTok nostalgia, and younger listeners have softened the backlash a bit. But the scars from feuds, lawsuits, bar fights, and memes remain. Was the Nickelback hate really about the music, or did Chad Kroeger’s ego, media narratives, and decades of band beefs snowball into the legend of “the most hated band in the world”? Watch the full video and decide for yourself.

Corey can whine all he wants. The president of the label says that Nickelback kept the lights on and saved the label. Otherwise, Corey would have been out on his ass.

So, there's all this hate – except for 100 Million people worldwide who buy out their concerts, fill arenas, and buy their albums. Chad should laugh at all the hate all the way to the bank.

I happen to love Chad. He's such a great boy kind of dude – I'd love to go out for a beer with him.

I listen to Nickelback every single day – large chunks of the catalog from 2000 onward. I live with a horrific, chronic, neuropathic pain condition and Nickelback at full volume has helped me make it through many long, agonizing nights. I owe them an immense thank you.

Besides, the reason people "hate" them is basically because they're too successful. Jealous much?

By the way, where is that hack of a comedian who made the Nickelback joke for MTV? How's his career going?

I am apathetic when it comes to Nickleback. Used to hear them on the radio. They overplayed them. I have never bought one of their records. I don't think I've ever listened to one all the way through.. but everyone has a right to like or dislike whatever they want. to actively trash another band is petty. Comes across as jealousy. If you don't like them, don't listen. Why should anyone give a crap what someone else chooses to listen to?? Middle school shit. Maybe Chad is an ass. . Who cares? I ain't hanging out with him. It's amazing that one joke by a comedian who himself is not that good imo, started all that. Also, I like the black keys but Patrick Carney can't talk about anyone ruining rock music. They were really good when they started but have been selling out hard for the last 10 years or so. They definitely have no business talking about anyone.

7:46 If your kneejerk response to your peers critiquing you is “sales” you already lost. Being better at selling is your label, your marketing, and ability to appease the masses. It does not reflect creativity, ingenuity, and levels of talent. Corey Taylor is a more talented vocalist than Chad. And can you imagine Ryan Vikedal or Daniel Adair trying to keep up with the late Joey Jordison’s drumming?

I’ve never cared about Nickelback, but to call them the most hated band seems to be a bit of a stretch, considering their amazing popularity. I wonder if these other acts are a little jealous of that. I don’t know. I could be wrong.

Hmm, sounds like a bunch of egos dueling. It sounds like jocks, and emos battling it out. Just be happy you "get to do what you love." Work my low wage job! Not even being able to pay rent, and food!!! I F**KING DARE YOU!!!

I can't name one slipknot song or one Brian posenhan joke or however tf you spell it. It's always bitter less successful people trying to tear others down.I'm not even the biggest Nickelback fan but Chad's points about Slipknot are right. They are all gimmick. No one knows them by their songs.

I like some of their music. It is admittedly good. But i hate Chad Kroeger and his eagle. Also, he looks like a douche with his weird front spike blond hair. Go back to the hair he had in the "how you remind me" era.

The State is a kick ass post-grunge album. After that, Nickelback started putting a few pop tunes on their records. But so what? That was their choice and it certainly helped sell more records and opened them up to playing stadiums.

There are a thousand bands more diverse than Nickelback, and I'm not just saying that because all Nickelback songs sound the same. The Stranglers, Kilburn and The Highroads, Madness and The Kinks all come to mind without any effort or thought. That dude is worse than the singer of Oasis when it comes to prideful disillusions.
