Nick Drake Was Magnificent.

Justin Hawkins Rides Again | February 24, 2026

He is known by nearly everyone who plays acoustic guitar and writes songs. Nick Drake was an incredible songwriter who wrote 3 amazing albums. I’m reacting to River Man today. It’s surprisingly more complex to play than you might think. It’s beautiful. Are you a fan of Nick Drake? What’s your favourite song?

I just discovered Nick Drake's amazing talent a few months ago and I'm so glad I happened upon his work! Such a shame he left us so young, he seemed to have so much more to give the world =/ thankyou for the reaction Justin 🙂

Richard Thompson only plays the electric guitar part on Time Has Told Me. All the other guitar parts are played by Drake. River Man has the LPO strings plus Danny Thompson.

Justin my good man It actually doesn't surprise me but at the same time it does of your admiration for Nick's talent. I have always been a huge fan of both of you which makes it all the more interesting and enjoyable to hear you speak of his talent in such a kind light

I saw in interviews from people that knew Nick who said that not only was he an amazing guitar player, but that he was a tall man and had huge hands, a sort of Franz Liszt of the folk music world. Probably why he was able to play difficult chords with such ease.

The resemblance of the album cover with Pink Floyd's Umma Gumma, released later that year (1969) is amazing. I was 12 and thanks to you first learned of Nick Drake, and you are correct, 5/4 is dificult.

To have produced the quality of work he did in his short lifetime was remarkable. Not only the three albums but the songs that were released posthumously – songs like Hanging Star have the spare, resigned feeling of Pink Moon.
