Nic Collins Hears “Whiplash” For The First Time
When Nic Collins came out to the Drumeo studio, we asked him to describe his stylistic comfort zone. As you can imagine, rock, prog-rock, and funk were all in his wheelhouse.
We then asked him what styles he’s least comfortable with, and he mentioned metal and jazz, the latter of which “is a nightmare for me”.
We asked him to listen to a drumless version of “Whiplash”, a jazzy 1973 Don Ellis tune that enjoyed a resurgence in the 2010s thanks to the drumming-themed movie of the same name.
Without drums in the track to guide him, Nic had to rely on his intuition to come up with a part on the fly that he thought would fit. In the end, we let him hear what the drums are actually supposed to sound like. How do you think he did?

It's good to see a celebrity's child be successful without embarrassing their parents or rebelling. Bravo Nic Collins, I wish you a very successful career.

18:05 absolutely the opposite. Keeps me misunderstanding why would you chose the lazy version of drums.

Should've gave him the Caravan (from the final scene of Whiplash), it would've been much better. Or could gave him the version of Whiplash with the leading drums (like in the film). The disappointment of ease of the real version is killing the vibe of something special for drums (or why else would you call such a special drummer).

Jazz is garbage. Random noise masquerading as "music".

The idea that I played over this and clearly i didnt have to. Is horrible. Honestly what he played was a superior sound in my opinion. I love the movie, but his playing over the drumless track hit me better than the original recording no doubt.

This channel has really punished Nic, first he had to play Opethās ghost of perdition (and he absolutely killed that hard song), and now this off beat jazzy tune? Geez, if this was a game you would start him on nightmare mode š
