New Drummer, Old Songs (w/ Tosh Peterson) | The Drum Department 🥁 (Ep.43)

Drumeo | October 22, 2025

Today’s modern rock and pop drummers bring a tremendous amount of energy and excitement to their performances. It makes you wonder: What if a drummer from today were thrust back in time to play with some of our favorite bands and artists? What would those classic songs sound like with today’s edgy drumming? Today on the Drum Department, we’ve tasked guest drummer Tosh Peterson with playing classic songs using modern drumming techniques.

There are front, middle, and back pocket drummers. Here, Tosh plays at the front of the pocket on these songs….does he always have that bent? (Not a critique, just noting style.)

There's a YT short where Daney Carey is talking to Rick Beato about how Jeff Buckley taught him how to "hear" the intro to Rock and Roll in order to count it in. ("and a-one and a-two…")

You guys NEED to have every drummer you have on the show do a 1-2 minute drum solo before they leave. I'm sure you'd get a huge stock of awesome freaking drum solos that will be re-visited forever..

re: fortunate son – I dig his intensity, but he's trying to PUSH the band ON a recorded tune. They won't be following!
It's more than playing in front of the beat. He was WAAAAY too far in front & clearly fought himself back in time, especially in the beginning. I'm sure he's a ferocious live drummer, but that was a little sloppy IMHO.
I imagine it's just "not in his wheelhouse."
We all have strengths and weaknesses.

To use a Whiplash reference: he's rushing. A lot of different things happening but not really tidy what tempo and fills are concerned, except in Smoke on the Water, which was great.
