Hey young lady…. Read to the book "Shakey"…. also, Danny Whitten was fired by NY…
DDed and and died. He never forgave himself for that…. And if you listen to Cowgirl and Down by The River…. It is said, that those Solo's are guitar banter back and forth between Danny and Neil….. That I why you will NEVER hear it again the same as the album…
the song you're trying to find out about called Sonny the only thing I can think of is the one that has these lyrics.
" Sonny you're a fine girl what a good wife you would be".

The first album I got high to. “Down by the River” and “Cinnamon Girl” (I married one) are part of my DNA. The album has nothing (IMHO) but hits on it. Rock on!

I got to set up my sawhorses down by the river rebuilding the seventh street bridge over the Trinity River in Ft Worth. Living the dream 😊🙏🏼

I’ve always thought of “Down by the River” as a traditional murder ballad like “Knoxville Girl” by the Louvin Brothers.

Abi yet another fantastic video! I was wondering though why did you choose this particular Neil Young album? It's been a long time since I read all about Neil and his back catalogue but I don't remember this album being hailed as a classic, happy to be put right though! Keep up the good work!

19:08– I remember still listening to E.K.T.I.N. ( the album) in the summer of 73, so when the song was played in that scene in Almost Famous it felt right to me. It evoked strong feelings from that particular time in me. Most of the other songs in the movie did as well, but this is the one that did it for me the most. It’s my favorite music scene in the whole movie.

neil's first solo album has great songs. the problem was the flat over-done production. everyone knows this is nowhere is an indelible classic. but then again, maybe you had to be there.

Well done, Abigail. I love parts of Neil's first LP dearly, but some of it is just WTF. What Neil did lyrically on some of this album was shift the narrator's perspective–or even shift the narrator–so that as you suggested, close attention and an engaged imagination were needed to grasp, at least for yourself, what the songs are about. And Crazy Horse did one really good album and over the years provided one of Neil's favorite musical settings. The movie Year of the Horse mostly got reviews ranging from meh to ugh, but I loved it.

60's Art Major here — I was VERY happy to see, and buy, Neil Young's first two 'solo' albums in the wake of Buffalo Springfield's 'break-up' or surprisingly productive dispersal, as it turned out to be. I felt vindicated in my tastes when the public embraced this guitar-heavy album, since it sold steadily for YEARS — not to mention the CS&N, Poco, and Loggins & Messina phenomena, or even Manassas. (Good thing I didn't mention those many confusing collaborations with Buffalo Springfield musicians!)

1970 and this record was in just about all my friends constant rotation. Cinamon Girl hooked us and we listened to the rest.

It was never considered a serious proposition but up until the late 1990s people up here (in the place your President has proposed as 51st state) used to jokingly say that "Cinnamon Girl" should be adopted as the new Canadian National Anthem.

I was a fan of Neil's dad Scott Young's hockey themed children's books as a kid before I even knew who Neil was. Saw Neil on the Greendale tour and it was great.
