Native Bidaské: Using Theater to Tell the Stories of MMIW – A Talk with Laura Shamas (Chickasaw)

Native News Online | January 11, 2026

In this episode of Native Bidaské, Kristen Lilya sits down with playwright Laura Shamas to discuss her gripping new play, “Four Women in Red.” This powerful production shines a spotlight on the devastating crisis of missing and murdered Indigenous women (MMIW) in the United States.

Shamas, a member of the Chickasaw Nation, shares the inspiring journey of how “Four Women in Red” came to be. Originally a 10-minute piece developed through Native Voices, the play has since blossomed into a full-length exploration of resilience, grief, and the relentless pursuit of justice.

“These women are not over it, but they’re going on and they’re still keeping on. They’re still really strongly pursuing justice,” Shamas explains, describing the play’s complex and powerful characters.

The production’s impact extends beyond the stage, with the Victory Theater, a non-native institution, taking on the play – a significant step in amplifying Indigenous voices in the Los Angeles theater scene.

“We need more theaters to do that so that we have more Native Voices artistically circulating our art,” Shamas emphasizes.

As the conversation unfolds, both Lilya and Shamas express a profound sense of hope. This play, and the conversations it sparks, are a testament to the resilience and determination of Indigenous communities, and a call to action in the ongoing fight to end the MMIW crisis.

Don’t miss your chance to experience the raw emotion and unwavering spirit of “Four Women in Red.” Catch the play at the Victory Theater in Burbank, California, and be a part of the movement for justice and awareness.
