Moog DFAM: The Mutant Drum Synthesizer

Benn Jordan | March 18, 2026

Everything you wanted to know about the Drummer From Another Mother.
BTW, in a rage to crank this video out, I did something really dumb and careless. I searched “synth expert” and used someone’s image/likeness in a derogatory and completely unwarranted way. It turns out the “synth expert” is Das Ding, a very nice fellow with great tunes. He absolutely is a synth expert, but in the good way!
(time to sign up for Adobe Stock, I reckon)

I only let my women use the DFAM when the washing and ironing is done and my dinner is on the table. Even then I’ll check to see if there’s any dusting or hoovering needs doing and the bathrooms are clean. If that all checks out and there’s no shopping to do, then and only then will I let her get the DFAM out.

in places a bit skeptical but interesting and complete review) certain conclusions can serve as a reason for reflection, but judging by what I saw it can serve as a good standalone box for part of the setup and a cool thing for recording yourself some cool strange sounds)

Awesome review and jam, love the tracks and can't wait to see you live! Lastly, loved the little digression at 26:08 haha… btw, get a used sliding door and kitchen cabs, spray paint that shit in the colors your wife likes, put a candle here and there, some Marvin Gaye and dimmers installed… and she wont know a dif and will love you, as you use the majority of the renoivation budget to get more Moog stuff and rack space 😉 Worked with me, though she did leave me in the end, but for other reasons hihi.. and took my dog, that got me… ANyway keep em coming subscribed!

Not sure why your reference to females starts this but the DFAM name is a reference to the movie "The brother from another Planet." How do I know this? I am older than you also, that was a very cool movie with very cool synth parts.

Unbelievable – I was also not aware of your stage name "The Flashbulb" and I'm following your synth reviews for some time now…. Just bought your gorgious album "Nothing is Real" from Bandcamp – good luck to finally make it to MOOGFEST! 🙂 – regards from Germany – Thomas

Not convinced that the Moog filter is particularly good at really punchy HPF perc sounds for my taste. I can get more punch and variety out of a BS2 from what I've heard so far. DFAM seems to need FX to shine.

LOVE the NIN reference. I am a huge fan of them, and I also thought the same thing when I was watching another video on the DFAM. I really need to get one of these. I just love the timbres coming out of it. Thanks for this helpful video!

23:25 "That said if you're a guitarist and you're melodically trained and looking for your first synth, you may be underwhelmed by the pure unquantised analog sequencer and the 8 steps" <– haha that's me. What would you guys recommend as drum synth along these lines that would be more robust for my needs?

What a dumpster fire of a comment section… Ben tried to make obvious statements about men and women… and here comes the delicate flowers of the Man Brigade to save us all. I personal think they should shut up and make music. The DFAM is a racous, ruthless little drum synth that could have been made more useful w/ some changes. I love personally, but sometimes I question whether I should spent a little less and got a more traditional drum machine
