Modest Mouse and the Story of ‘Building Nothing Out of Something’
Before Modest Mouse achieved critical acclaim with their 2004 album “Good News for People Who Love Bad News” on Epic Records, the band had become indie rock darlings of the Pacific Northwest. In 2000, they’d give us their major label debut, “The Moon And Antarctica,” but before that came an indie culmination of creativity — a compilation on their soon-to-be former label Up Records, released in January of 2000 and dubbed “Building Nothing Out Of Something.” This is the story of their transformation and the compilation that sealed their indie years as they looked forward to major label success.

I've been listening to Modest Mouse since the mid 90's. They are one of the rare bands that have changed dramatically several times throughout the years and it's been better every time.

However Built to Spill sound, Idaho is absolutely not part of the PNW. There’s no Pacific.

I'm probably your age, and I have a kid brother who was born in '99 who has been my concert buddy since he was 15. We were listening to a lot of old Modest Mouse last night, and I was highlighting the lyrical genius of Brock. In many ways, he's a Buddhist and doesn't know it, which is something I find a lot in highly productive songwriters. I myself always avoided faith traditions but when I really came to understand Zen practice, I realized that Buddhism can be a pathological condition.

I remember hearing their music used in a nissan minivan commercial. Growing up is being happy they got paid for it. Heard float on in a commercial yesterday. Money in the bank.

Isaac Brock will always be one of my heroes. He's poetic and funny and filled with sadness. It's a strange, but very good mix.

The best part of this comp is trying to listen to each song and place them within the timeline of the full lengths. The production, styles, tones and drums are there to reveal themselves.

Definitely one of my all time favorite bands! Its been over 20 years and I still listen to them multiple times a week. Thanks for another great video!
