Mike Portnoy & Jordan Rudess Play “The Dance Of Eternity” | Dream Theater

Drumeo | February 27, 2026

“The Dance of Eternity” is one of the most iconic (and toughest) progressive metal songs ever recorded. Over the past two years, both Mike Portnoy and Jordan Rudess from Dream Theater visited the Musora studios — and filmed some amazing performances.

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of “Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory”, we put together a mashup of Mike and Jordan playing this legendary (and seriously complex) track.

Give it 4,500 years and The Dance of Eternity might just become the Eighth Wonder of the World. Scientists and scholars will keep studying it forever, still wondering how on earth it was "made", right up there with the Pyramid of Giza.

Psh…this is an easy song. Any n00b can do it blind folded. Those time signature changes are just for show to make it appear hard.

    Edit:

4:05, I love that bass solo where John plays a solo.

I work with a boy who is ASD2. He loves music, and loves music theory. When I play this song for him in the car, he is dead silent. I can see the gears turning in his head. I wish I could hear, the way he hears this song. He will often request, Dance of Eternity, Tool – 46 and 2, Diana Ross – Chain Reaction and Lindsey Stirling – Roundtable Rival.

I'm procrastinating from doing my time and rhythm course work to listen to Dream Theatre. I loved them since I was first exposed to them when I was 16 by my metal head aunt.
