“Merciless Indian Savages”: America 250 Through an Indigenous Lens

Indian Country Today | July 4, 2026

As the U.S. marks 250 years, ICT brings together Indigenous journalists, scholars and community leaders to examine this milestone through an Indigenous lens — confronting the founding era’s impact on Native nations, exploring tribal sovereignty and activism today, and envisioning a more truthful national narrative for the next 250 years. Join us July 2 for a conversation that reclaims narrative and elevates Indigenous voices.

Does the word "Indian" refer to an invasion from India, as ordered by British men on a hunt for human girls? Indians and blacks would be useful when invading a community and extracting girls. "Indian" refers to the Indus River in India. Why would aboriginal people in the Americas accept the nomenclature?

British men brought blacks and Indians to America. Recently, Indians were imported to invade the computer industry (Seattle). Are Indians the king's soldiers?

Wow ! I have so much I'd love to comment about, though it could take pages. I'm Alaska Native, adopted out in infancy, that truth had always been told us, I have a sibling, not same clan as he's full blood, I'm half and we each had different birth parents. I can definitely see how we were part of that experimentation. I would love to talk privately with Native community about my experiences. 💕🥰💕🥰

They came with a bible and their religion. They stole our land and crushed our spirit, and now tell us we should be thankful to "the Lord" for being saved. ~ Chief Pontiac

Thank you. If you listen to native and some Christian prophesies; including Revelations; this is the time that is supposed happen. The indian prophesies say pray, meditate, and fast for the creator until the Creator fulfills his promises. The bible says God loved the World; not the people but everything in the world he created; The Yupik says that when the beaver reaches the western alaska coast that the end will be here. God, Creator , and LLam Yua is purifying the world which belongs all to him; and not to those who believe that they should b e lord over everything on the planet. The violence was expected and so we continue to pray, fast, and medittate.

I see what is going on now as the last death knell of our evil racist entitled colonizer mentality. Hang in there folks keep pushing for the democracy we need & deserve, not the fascism that they are trying to impose upon us.

Tribally enrolled with European phenotype and I very often get challenged by both Tribal and non-tribal people to produce my CDIB when at events. Used to not carry it, but now I take at least a copy of both CDIB and Citizenship/enrollment.

It offends me yet i embrace it. In Indian Territory, we are forced to be merciless Indian savages in mindset. But knowledge of Indian law is the key to shutting yte folk down. If the Supremest Court can change 90yr old laws, the mfs can rewrite the MIS bs.

One more thought. America is, or could be depending on who thinks about it, its own multicultural tribe. Its democracy needs to include EVERYONE in America. Tribal law is still a system of do’s and don’ts. Education still requires a history of every side not just the one decided by who is in power. And our government needs to reflect that multicultural tribal influence so that everyone benefits. We are, after all, just as human as our neighbors and we all deserve the best if each other, not the worst. 💙💙🦩

I have always doubted that any Indigenous American was a savage. Not a good word. That was a word chosen by a feudal language used by white skinned interlopers who just wanted to be right. And I, for one, became tired of listening to history that only told one side of the story so I became a researcher and proponent of Native American cultures. What I found was an immense, thousands of years plus, history of knowledge of medicine, plants, cuisine, animal husbandry and hunting, trade, innovations, and a belief system that teaches us we are Caretakers of our planet not Owners, as a “Christian” belief would have you think. When I think of the way it could have been, a meeting of minds, an exchange of ideas and a sharing of natural resource, I feel a deep sadness that greed, stupidity and hate was the only answer white people had in their minds. So, I add my voice to those who believe history should always have both sides bringing truths to
Our planet and all Peoples thrive, not die at the hands of greedy individuals. There were hard times on both sides for many innocent people, but the truth is clear to me. Savagery was introduced by a wave of white skinned individuals too afraid to learn something new. And that was as much a waste as what is happening elsewhere now. Some rich people think they own everything when in truth they own nothing. Thank you for this program, it’s very informative. I hope many people watch it. 💙🦩💙🦩🦩🦩🌿🐿️🥜🐈‍⬛🐾🕊️

I'm Lakota based on family oral stories. The pride was lost with my grandfather. But my mother remembered the stories and shared them with me. In my heart, I know that I am 100% indigenous. So much more to the story, but I have always been told I'm just an "Indian wannabe ". That has always made me feel bad and as if I belonged nowhere. I will do whatever is needed to support the indigenous people, my people. I just needed to say this so as to be heard. Thank you all for these programs.
