Nuclear. Power. Trio. Tell them that masked bands have a problem. And tell me they sound like every other masked band. Last I checked, there's not that many bands running around there playing insane fusion and looking like these dudes do. Oh and you're welcome, cuz yeah you're right, they are fucking awesome!!!!!!

P.S. – The (John) Candy. The masks make it……and you've NEVER heard anything even close to what they do. NOT a gimmick!!!!!!

    Mes Claypool wears masks too.

All of the above have unique ways of masking, and its more like a trademark not a copying of gimmicky shit, and in all those cases it adds to the show and is not a detriment.

And Slipknot and Mushroomhead are absolutely awesome and a much better representation of the wonderful world of masks than lame ass sleep token. Sleep token would suck no matter what masks they were or if they didn't wear masks, shit music is shit music and that's just the way it is.

The only masked band that I was ever a big fan of was Mr. Bungle in their early years. I saw them at "The Howling Wolf" Nightclub in New Orleans when their debut dropped back in the day, and it was such a new/fresh experience that blew my young mind to pieces! I had never been a fan of masked bands up until that point like Kiss, Gwar, etc. But Bungle were just different.

All of that said, I generally find all of that stuff very cheesy & silly tbh. I mean, props to Slipknot for taking Mr. Bungle's thing and really running with it. The spectacle is quite impressive live, but I just can't take it seriously.

Ok… now that I've babbled on I suppose should actually watch the darn video lol.

Im not a ST fan, but the two songs Ive heard were fairly creative and enjoyable to listen too imo. That said the masks are a humongous reason for their success, but the same can and has been said for any masked band.

I'm sorry. Personal tastes beside, if you are actually arguing that bands like Sleep Token, Ghost, Gaerea, Midnight or MGLA make bad music, that's just musical ignorance. And to say that Sleep Token rely on their image for their success is laughable. I'd really like to know what you base that on.

I'm curious where both Clown Core and Kami-sama, I have noticed both fit in this. Clown Core being an American duo shitposting in a similar way to GWAR or The Residents , but in a… I guess you could say [adult swim] kinda way, and Kami-sama, I have noticed being a Japanese group separate from Western culture but still using a slight mystique behind them in a way I find similar to Daft Punk . Not being scary, but still putting on characters. (I also just find their masks in particular really nice lookin' ^-^)

I have to say that putting sleeptoken here and claiming they rely on their masks for their success is kinda ridiculous. they were grinding since 2016 writing music and I've known about them since 2017, they've had their masks since the founding of the band and were playing small gigs/stages for 4 years and were not that well known. only people deep in the scene listening to bands from the UK like loathe MIGHT of known about them. and they only truly started popping off in 2021/2022 they've always worn their masks and it was just simply to keep their identities hidden and naturally they'd want to be a little creative and make it play into their image. but they never "relied" on it and they simply stuck to what they were doing from the very beginning, they never changed, they never expected fame. they just did what they did which was different from the rest of the crowd (it was hated on then, and it still is hated on, but it didn't matter because they liked their sound and if they hadn't believed in themselves they wouldn't of stuck around for 4-5 years to see their sudden success) in time it was bound to hit a wider audience with it's accessibility in regards to the vocalists style of singing and his incorporation of pop/hiphop influences. I'd agree that some of their writing is very mid… obnoxious switching into sectios with no build-up is deffinitely a big pet-peave of mine with them. like the rap-esque section in take me back to eden. it's just so out of place and very very mid… a few other songs do this kind of thing too. however overall, they're alright. decent. not anything amazing, but not that bad either. President is just a shitty generic octanecore Tryhard SleepToken rip-off.

I’m not a sleep token fan but there drummer is amazing probably one if not my favorite drumming style with the heavy gospel speratic style and was the sole reason I liked them for so but even in Arcadia was so buns that in the atmospheric but spirit box and loathe just do it way better

I tried to listen to Sleep Token, and all I could think of was that like 20 year old skit, "Metal By Numbers". Doesn't fit 1:1 but it would need surprisingly few updates to apply to Sleep Token, and really, a lot of the current trendy metal.
Needless to say, I found it so boring, I'm not gonna bother looking further into it.

i just sadly watched a live video of president after this video, literal definition of coworker music but with corny masks, i know their fans all gotta be 35+ 😭😭🕊

Listen I’m not of the mindset that someone has to be a musician to criticize music, but if you think Sleep Token’s songwriting or even their production is “formulaic” then so is all the music you’ve ever listened to and enjoyed in your life. Formulaic doesn’t “I find it boring” it means copying a commonly used structure from successful pieces without direct reference as a substitution for inspiration or genuine expression. There is none of that in their music, even in the most recent album you dislike so much. You can dislike their music that’s fine, but if you think it’s formulaic you have no idea what that even means.

Now President on the other hand… that’s like asking an AI to write Sleep Token songs and then applying a shallow theme based on top Google searches. That’s formulaic slop.

I used to wear a balaclava or a gimp mask with a suit when I played bass for other bands since I wanted to keep that and my shitty solo music separated

Can say the eye pic has transcended the band I’ve seen it god knows how many times and I’m just now learning who these guys is

I'm pretty sure president and sleep token want to be left alone, and wear masks so they can try to have any form of privacy.

Along with that, I was in a few crappy local bands, as a frontman it would be a lot easier to escape into the music with a mask. Stage fright keeps you too grounded in a bad way.

As far as Slipknot goes, you're way too cynical…

Becoming a business is a one way street for bands like Slipknot. It's not just the band, it's an entire group of people who work around the band and depend on them for their income. Having gone what they've gone through and realizing that the only way forward is to get your shit together, no one belongs in the team if they're causing a problem. We'll never know what actually happened until they're retired and start putting out autobiographies, so it's all speculation.

Jay was in the band for ten years and was rumored to be a colossal nepo baby and spoiled diva.
Joey was most likely deep into drugs and his issues were symptoms of it
Paul, well, was Paul and it all went to shit right there and then
Chris was golfing an hour away from where Paul passed
Craig — honestly, did you even notice?
Eloy is the best thing to happen in the metal scene, we should be grateful the band gets an honest shot at something meaningful

Look, man. I know it sucks. I love Slipknot, but I learned that a) stars are not exempt from being human and b) there's no fucking money in the arts. So let them make figures, merch, and whatever the fuck they want. They got families and crew to feed.

This romantic notion that the artist should never sell out is something you should outgrow as well.

A major thing u forgot to mention that contributes to why Sleep Token’s visual style works so well is because like Gwar, they have an extremely detailed yet very beautiful lore to them as well, which all the other bands u mentioned lack.
