Mama wolf calls pups out of the den

Wolf mommies—the terminology used by the most sophisticated biologists—call their pups out of the den with a whimper or whine. You can hear it in this video and see how the pups react. Often, they call the pups out to feed and interact with them. Not much space in a den like this for 6 pups and an adult wolf!

This particular footage is from a den in the Lightfoot Pack in 2020. The den looks like some ancient dwelling in a primeval forest. A neat place! And while the den might look big from the opening, it was really quite small. Nonetheless, Lightfoot’s 6 pups squeezed in there just fine!

    What a beautiful family! Hearing Mama's calls to her babies was quite the experience, even though it was just over video! Hopefully one day soon I will make it to Yellowstone and can see a wild wolf pack from a safe distance myself.

    I'd love to hear from the researchers if all this wolf knowledge has at all helped them better understand pet dogs and their needs. I ask cause I've heard this before but never realized it was a "come to me" call.
