Mike Birbiglia | August 18, 2025

Malik Elassal is a stand-up comic, writer, actor, and one of the stars of Adults on FX. Meeting for the first time, Mike and Malik discuss Malikโ€™s winding road to stand-up, including working as a long-haul trucker. Malik talks about dealing with his conspiracy-minded cousins, his encounters with Islamophobia, and why you should never leave your comedy set list open on your phone when youโ€™re at the airport.

So, like, I think, like, maybe, like Malik should, like, listen to this podcast with like a paper and pen and like, make a mark, like every time he, you know, like, says 'like'. Smart, funny, talented dude. You talk for a living: be mindful of this, it is incredibly distracting.

28:50 for Malikโ€™s bit, the angle could be: great, we got the fact that god loves me squared away, but I still have this deep feeling of not being enough. What am I supposed to do with that? How does this serve me now? How does having this help me a be happier person?

25:00 for this bit on being a waiter serving bloody maryโ€™s:

I felt sorry for these people, because I realized they actually do need help or therapy, and all they have is a 21 year old whoโ€™s only solution heโ€™s qualified to offer isโ€ฆwould you like Bloody Mary?
