Lumbee Tribe’s Fight for Federal Recognition | A Century-Long Battle
For over a century, the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina has fought for full federal recognition. Now, a new presidential memorandum has directed the Department of the Interior to assist in this process, marking a historic moment for the Lumbee people.
Tribal Chairman John Lowry shares his excitement, calling this level of federal support “unprecedented.” While some tribes, including the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, oppose the congressional approach, Lowry explains why only Congress can correct the legal limbo the Lumbee have been in since the 1956 Lumbee Act.
With over 55,000 enrolled members, the Lumbee are one of the largest tribes in the country. Federal recognition would not only affirm their sovereignty but also provide access to critical resources.

The lumbee “tribe” has been caught in lies such as stealing from other tribes cultural heritages(including from tribes they don’t claim t be from) and has no one ethnic or evolved language from the tribes they’ve claimed to be from. They have no proof of base rolls (bia approved records) of tribal members migrating from their tribe and joining the “lumbee”. There is unfortunately not enough evidence, records or proof of documentation to prove any of their claims. This a fuck you to real tribes that don’t meet federal requirements but are actually legitimate.

This is the reason why we lost to this country to the Europeans, tribes fighting tribes. Apparently we haven’t learned anything. Why are you so afraid of the Lumbee tribe getting federally recognized?

The Lumbee voted for Trump in hopes of getting federal recognition. Now President Musk is dismantling every Tribe's recognition. No shame.

With all do respects Trumps signs bill to end birthright citizenship a law that gave Native American children the rights to be a tribe member and a US citizen at same time without being married to a white male or having a white father or in the milliary pre 1925 Native Americans were not citizens if both parents were Native non military???So birthright citizenship makes Native Americans Citizens.by law.How can you justify supporting Trump Are you worried that Your citizenship as a American Citizens could be jeopardized??Voting rights SSI ect?? What am I missing see other tribes worried

This is yet another example of white people co opting our culture for money. The only reason Trump approved it is because this white boy is advocating for it.

Lumbee are pretendians. The US settler colonial states, don't hold the authority to "recognize" their settlers as Indians nations, and the orange man has no say in the matter. This settler group playing Indian has attacked the sovereignty of the Cherokee for FAR too long now.

Respectfully I stand with my tribe’s stance, the eastern band of Cherokees, on the matter of the “lumbees”. A dialect of English does not constitute a distinct indigenous language and regardless of whether or not there is any presence of native DNA or not, does not make up for the fact that not knowing the name of your people or origin of your tribe and thus naming your tribe after the town and then adopting a pan-Indian, vaguely southeastern now more recently, style of regalia, does not a indigenous culture make. There are many tribes in existence which are seeking federal recognition which are indigenous with distinct cultures but lost federal recognition or never received it due to lack of population or various circumstances and I firmly believe that those tribes should receive federal recognition. Peoples such as Cajun or creole people are of mixed heritage and might have some native heritage but I don’t think that would/should qualify them for federal recognition either.🤷♂️ but that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t or can’t take pride in being from a culture of much blending, Latin culture and Caribbean culture is all about celebrating the blending of cultures to make something new. Not being an actual indigenous tribal culture doesn’t make them less than as people or human beings, they can still be a distinct part of the southeast but I think they should celebrate being a very very very much blended area of North Carolina. But it’s very unsurprisingly the current government administration wouldn’t recognize/understand/care about authenticity of REAL tribes with deep TRACEABLE roots back to the areas where they live with distinct LANGUAGES and with distinct CULTURES that were not copied from other surrounding tribes. In recent times doing the most illogical and unprofessional thing possible has become the new normal.
