Lou Hazel writes with the same kind of insight that made John Prine so monolithic. Lou’s writing is direct, unadorned, charming, and, at times, really damn heartbreaking. There are no wasted moments in his songs. They are rich in the type of observation that only the most curious of people could find.

Lou said about Echo:

It feels less about telling a story, and more about floating around in a weather system of questions. Or trying to orient myself in a world that feels huge, mysterious, cruel but also beautiful. Who decides my portion of this life? Maybe “save me from my echo”, is saving me from hearing only myself, or the echo chambers of the little circles we live in? I’m not really sure, lots of stuff rattling around up there.

My friend Mike Taylor from Hiss Golden Messenger deff inspired this tune. He’s my neighbor and we write a lot of music together. He showed me this tuning – dropping the B string down to an A. The early Hiss songs that I love use this tuning quite a bit.
