Practically everything J Sakai wrote is superseded by the last chapter of Das Kapital, Volume 1, "The Modern Theory of Colonization"
Sakai himself has in recent years declared the Chinese to be engaging in 'settlerism' of Tibet, and has admitted he believed AIDs was a plot to destroy black people lmao. Also, Sakai had a strange worship of African-Americans and believed them to be the revolutionary vanguard that was going to rise up and form a separate state, even though they clearly have aligned themselves overall with integrationism. Additionally, his romanticized portrayal of African-Americans as the revolutionary vanguard and his belief in a unique solidarity between African and Asian Americans appear outdated, especially in lieu of contemporary conflicts between these communities, as seen in places like San Francisco.

Thank you so much for this wonderful discussion. As someone who has been actively involved in wolf reintroduction efforts in New Mexico, Arizona and Colorado, I’ve come to see that the intense, and at times hysterical opposition to wolves goes far beyond concerns about livestock or wildlife management. Instead it is rooted in a deeper settler-colonial mindset where land, more- than -humans, and ecosystems as "things" to be dominated, controlled, and made profitable, rather than as living systems we’re in relationship with.

The backlash we see from some ranchers, trophy hunters, and rural communities appears to be about defending a historical sense of ownership and entitlement to the land. Wolves represent a challenge to that worldview. Their return suggests that the land may not exist solely to serve human (and specifically settler) interests and threatens a cultural identity built on conquest, control, and frontier mythology.

Through the lens of settler-colonial critique, such as in J. Sakai’s Settlers, this reaction begins to make sense. Settler societies often respond with hostility when the land begins to push back, or when Indigenous values and ecological relationships begin to re-emerge. In that light, the resistance to wolves reflects not just economic anxiety, but a deeper fear of losing cultural dominance and narrative control. And this, I think also ties into the fear that the "frontier" will/has come to an end.

I'm currently reading Settlers, and my opinion so far is largely positive. Although I've been doing a deep dive into readings on settler colonialism and imperialism over the past couple of years, I'm learning so much from this book. It should be required reading for everyone.

1:06:33 i think part of sakai’s point is that the artisan and small manufacturer classes were predominantly euro american, contrasted to the enslaved class. he does tend to use the word “proletarian” loosely tho

Wrt labour and intl proletariat, settler wages of whiteness. I'm in Mi'kma'ki, and Fred Burrill wrote a great piece a while back about the "Maritime Marxist" school and the "underdevelopment" frame = white supremacy class consciousness and junior partners with capital. Props to Sakai. And to Moufawad-Paul esp. wrt the critique of 'settler colonial studies'.

Dr. Baba Zak Kondo in his seminal book Conspiracys: Unraveling The Assassination Of Malcolm X wrote linguistically continental Afrikans use the letter k instead of c.

The book "American Genocide" documents how the California gold rush settlers enslaved indigenous women in their household to do housework and men to work the ranch unpaid and even to work the gold mines for them. They didn't want to work. That was the whole point of owning gold, so you could pay people to work for you, the American Dream.

Really great and helpful. As always Jared brings useful insights. I feel like I need to read this whatever its flaws, and anything that attempts to elucidate from a revolutionary point of view the emergence of synthetic identities good and ill. I would argue that a coherent understanding of this area of language and rhetoric and human behavior would require a framework accounting for differential power across multiple axes.

Love TRN but Jared Ware and Asian $ellout Propagandist puppet Dylan Rodriguez dismiss the STOP ASIAN HATE MOVEMENT as a 'Zionist creation' and 'counterinsurgency'. SHAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
