I feel like Hillary 2016 (like Gore 2000) isn't necessarily liminal. Simply because of the historic significance of the elections and the fact that they both won the popular vote. I'd say that campaign literature and merch is still relevant today.
I still have an Elizabeth Warren 2020 sticker on my car. Now that is liminal.

Hello JJ, my name is Friends. I miss the old intro, please bring it back. Maybe you can introduce the topic at the start, do the hello, then get into the meat and potatoes of the video, if you want an engaging start for the more brain-addled viewers who need immediate engagement.

Just so struck by Kim Campbell being the example of a mostly meaningless, transitional Prime Minister in Canada. Because she is still the only woman to ever be our Prime Minister. I already knew we sucked, having only one female leader take the top job, but, if this is how she's viewed, we suck even more than I think. My inner feminist isn't that surprised.

Relocated sports teams/defunct leagues are very liminal. I always get a joy out of seeing memorabilia/apparel for stuff like the Montreal Expos, World Championship Wrestling, the XFL or the Hartford Whalers.

Playbills! Live theatre is a particularly liminal experience, and one where I’m fully aware that this performance will only happen this one time, this cast and production only exist for the time being. It’s fun to look back and see what was being advertised, lots of shows that would be forgotten to time.

My favorite example is a globe made shortly after the fall of the Soviet Union where the post-Soviet countries were labelled as the "Commonwealth of Independent States"

Going off of the Washington Football Team example, the formerly Oakland Athletics are basically a liminal team with no location while they're waiting to get to Las Vegas.

The Euro amount is half of what the German Mark amount used to be. To this day, when people are annoyed by high numbers (price, temperature, time) they still say: but…that's (double amount) Mark!!!

One of my favorite “liminal objects” are maps and globes. It’s fun to try to guess when they were made just by using the country names and borders that were used

edit: especially interesting as the physical earth is rarely changing in any meaningful way, just the ways we as humans have generally agreed to parcel it out

I actually own a copy of Time Magazine issue from 2016 with Bill Clinton and George W Bush "Game of thrones" cover that highlighted how everyone thought the elections were going to be between Hilary Clinton and Jeb Bush… 😅

I want a Washington Football Team hoodie so bad, i remember when they changed that name thinking “oh wow, these will be pointless so soon” and that’s the first thing i thought of when i saw this thumbnail

The Onion had an article where an African village thanks the Buffalo Bills for the t-shirts over the years. True champions the villagers thought.

I found a Chicago Bears Super Bowl XLI Champions t-shirt at a Goodwill. If anyone is interested. I was like, "Wait, have I missed something? 2007? They've only won in 1995" If every shirt like this were released into the wild, it would be chaos. People would get punched. Perhaps they are finding their way back from Africa.

Nor sure if they count as liminal, but contrafactual history has that vibe. And someone wins the Super Bowl. I think that was also an Onion headline.

JJ, one of the best examples of this "Liminal Political Ephemera" is the brief period of time when Ted Cruz announced Carly Fiorina as his running mate, during the 2016 Primaries. I looked it up, and it was April 27th, 2016, as a "Hail Mary", until dropping out of the race only a week later, on May 3rd, 2016, after the Indiana Primaries. They definitely had signage at the event where Cruz introduced Fiorina, but I'm not sure if any actual merch ever got made. A hat or sweater with "Cruz-Fiorina 2016", would be one heck of a relic!

In Australia, the national rugby league had a brief “Pride round” complete with rainbow themed jerseys. There was a high profile scandal where 8 players from the Manly Sea Eagles refused to wear the rainbow and boycotted the game. The players were all Polynesian, so the team and the league were hesitant to fire the players or anything else that could make them look racist or culturally intolerant to the massive Polynesian community in the game. Instead, the eagles played that week without 8 of their players and lost. Pride round would not return to the NRL and the whole episode is now seen as an embarrassing failed experiment. The jerseys were taken off the market by the team and the few that were sold to the public fetch a high price on eBay. I think they serve as a good “liminal object”. A brief period of optimism that the game had for its future before they were swiftly reminded how regressive a lot of their fan base still is.
