After three incredible Toy Story movies wrapped up a touching story started all the way back in 1995, Pixar and Disney decided it was best to leave the franchise alone after such a great accomplishment. Oh, except then they made a fourth one. And now they made a spin-off. But other than that – just a great trilogy left untarnished by corporate greed!

Lightyear raises a lot of questions. Like what is this movie exactly? Was this really meant to represent an action movie that came out in the mid 90s? Why did Buzz land the entire colony onto a planet instead of sending a scout to see if it was habitable? Why did we never see a Sox the Cat toy in the Toy Story universe? Didn’t Toy Story 2 establish that Zurg was Buzz’s father and not… himself but from the future? Why is this a completely different version of Buzz than the character people know and love?

To answer all these questions and more, step inside the Pitch Meeting that led to Lightyear! It’ll be super easy, barely an inconvenience.

What annoys me most about the movie is the thing saying the movie came out in the 90’s and had a woman in a relationship.

Not because I dislike it, but because the 90’s was BARELY accepting of gay or lesbian relationships. Hell, Buffy didn’t even get Willow and Tarah to kiss until the new studio took it over….

Not to be “that person” but like an interracial gay couple in a 90s movie??? Idc abt a gay couple or whatever in a movie SET in the 90s, because gay people have always existed (duh), but like, did the movie industry? Especially in a kids movie, I can’t see them doing that.

"And his friend Alicia is growing old and starting a family in a way that will fuel Twitter arguments for several days" 🤣🤣🤣🤷🏻‍♂️ so she'll have a wife and a child out of the blue sky 😊

Also, one reviewer pointed out that the toy has a voice clip of him shouting "To infinity and beyond!" But he never shouts it out once in the entire movie so where did the recording come from?

Wasted opportunity to make an action film in the vein of how a 90s action film would’ve been made. If a kid saw this movie in 1995 there’s zero % chance that they’d want a toy of our this boring ass film.

Also I absolutely don’t want to shit on the one-second-and-you-miss-it lesbian kiss but in the context of this movie being a film released in 1995 excuse me. It that would’ve never happened back then. They didn’t even try to make this movie look like it was from the 90s starting with a queer kiss from two mothers which is ok now but would’ve never been seen back then.

If you watch Lightyear under the assumption that it's NOT a cheesy 90's sci-fi adventure, but instead of a mid-2000's Nolan-era Batman Begins style reboot…well, it's still BAD, but it makes a lot more sense as a movie.

Because I never bothered to wash this movie I just realized listening from the pitch meeting that it has so much similarities with flash movie plot except that one was better

A movie burdened with Disney's worst contemporary flaws would not have appealed to a 90s kid. The whole story failed to portray the original character authentically.
