Lifting up an Entire City With Jacks | Tales From the Bottle

Qxir | December 15, 2025

Sadly not a story about history’s strongest man, but lifting an entire city fourteen feet with jackscrews is still pretty interesting!

“During the 1850s and 1860s, engineers carried out a piecemeal raising of the level of central Chicago. Streets, sidewalks, and buildings were physically raised on jackscrews. The work was funded by private property owners and public funds.”

This and a lot of your older videos have autogenerated Viatnemese captions instead of English ones. You should probably change them at some point, for the sake of accessibility and people who can't watch your videos with sound for one reason or another.

Fun fact: In WW2 16.2 million Americans served in the Military. That is the population of 11 American States. Therefore, the U.S deployed every resident from Alaska, North Dakota, Wyoming, Vermont, Delaware, South Dakota, Idaho, Hawaii, Utah, Kansas and Arkansas which across these 11 states counts for roughly 16.2 million residents.

Fun fact: those 3 movie stunts you showed, only one was 'real'

    – Harold Lloyd was dangling off the clock tower but just under him was a crash mat built to break his fall
    – Chaplin was rollerskating near a ledge, but it was a painting on the floor with forced perspective
    – Buster Keaton was really on that train, because Buster Keaton didn't fuck around

anybody else notice that the autogenerated captions are not only awful, but also say "vietnamese" despite seeming to be mostly english words that occasionally sound vaguely like the words in the video

These businesses must have been just empty rooms with no water or electricity. Ah, the good old days when things were great. You didn't have sanitation, running water, electricity or modern medicine. Just wait a few months and the US will be great again.

Funny story, I live in a building where the backyard is about 8 feet below the sidewalk. So it seems with buildings tall enough they just raised the street and sidewalk
