Land back on the map

Indian Country Today | November 8, 2025

On the Thursday edition of the ICT Newscast, the land back movement is quantified and professors in Kansas are mapping the details. Theft and allotments through Oklahomaโ€™s history. Native historian Ned Blackhawk wins the National Book Award

All across the country, we hear news of tribal nations getting land back. Whether an outright purchase, or a donation, the movement is gaining traction. A project at the University of Kansas is putting it on a map.

An idea of MacArthur Fellow Sarah Deer, a fellow professor, helped her create a website to quantify Land Back. Shirley Sneve and Stewart Huntington have this interview.

A movie about the Osage Nation in Oklahoma brings light to allotments and oil money. โ€œKillers of the Flower Moonโ€ portrayed just a small part of the injustices Natives faced in the early 1900s. However, the theft and deception hit many Tribes โ€“ including the Muskogee. The Lucinda Hickory Research Institute paired up with Verified News Network to shed light on the atrocities.

Yale historian Ned Blackhawk is envisioning American history through a new lens โ€” putting Native peoples at the center of the narrative. This month, he won the prestigious National Book Award for his work, โ€œThe Rediscovery of America.โ€

We still have to fight for our sovereignty in Oklahoma against the current governor but we are in a great time that even though there are some who still refuse to understand the wrongs done to the indigenous population there is an even greater amount of people willing to be Allies!

Sick and tired of this crap. What you want more money and free things. Are you ppl even the original land owners of anything or did you come and steal it from other tribes. Are you going to pay those ppl. Did you never mention how your tribes bought and fought with English and British to make sure you beat your Indian adversaries and took them as slaves. You wonโ€™t teach that to your kids. You just teach that they are opressed somehow. Plus this fake story of kids in graves. Not one was found. But you want money for that to. Truly a disgrace to human civilization

A great thank you to this Native perspective on our Native Ancestors.
I was born in Pomona, California.
My Native lineage is of the Southern California Chumas-Tong-va people.
Sad fact= our family heritage is not recognized by the local Southern California tribes.
If they are federally recognized by the United States Government, they fall to realize the Southern California Native people existed way before this government laid claim /ownership over them.
Our people existed for many years on this PLANET… North or South America and beyond ๐ŸŽ‰.
