Use code NERD for 10% off ~ The BBC Literacy Project was just the start. What would follow was the BBC Domesday Project. This led to The Domesday Machine and the Domesday Discs, which when combined, had more knowledge contained about the 80s, than anything else at the time. Join me for The 40th Anniversary of this incredible project, as I talk to the folks to actually created it.
Huge thank you to The Centre for Computing History and everyone who allowed me to chat to them!

My goddess this stirred a memory in me, I was in school when this was being made, I do have a vague recollection of the doomsday project, and the school doing something for it! I was very young so I can't remember specifics, but it certainly rings a bell.

Thought I was paying attention, until about 12 mins in when I realized it wasn't "doomsday project"… facepalm.

And where is all this data now?! You’d hope it’s not still stranded on obsolete media readable only by obsolete and decaying hardware! I would hope it’s all been transferred to a simple DVD or Blu-Ray by now… but I’m not holding my breath. The original Domesday Book can be read by anyone who can turn pages of vellum. 900 years later and we progressed to putting data on something a handful of greybeards can access if we’re lucky and they keep breathing. Not exactly progress! Why hasn’t this all been open sourced years ago? (edited to add: you do address this preservation issue in the last third of the programme… but I still feel this project is harder to come across than it ought to be).

Clickbait title… Should say: 1985 BBC database project, community contributions on laserdisc-ROM (1.25 GB)

Four disc sides = 1200 to 1300 megabytes. So, two CDROM could have held what the two LV discs held.

If you arent aware of the amazing stats of statscan -> statistics canada has great data points of reliable data… its top tier. I often use stats can as a reliable way to adjust the perspective of my AI bud when it gets confused with bad data points >_<
Im gonna look more into this ^_^

Remarkable project/s. To be fair to Thatcher (re. the if the libraries had been better funded comment), Kenneth Baker and the Conservatives were massively behind the push for computer literacy push in the UK. And just like now, money was tight. Wish they had had the money to put it into more libraries though as you said. I only ever saw it from afar at our school, I think a unit that was on loan and guarded very protectively from prodding fingers. Trying it out later (online) you realise how brilliant it was.
