My daughter was going through a period of frustration, and she had the right to be upset. I am the safe person. One day I wouldn't let her do something and she said, "I hate you!" I looked at her, paused, and said, "Well, I love you." I meant it. She never said it again.

Aside from that, I didn't hit my kids, but they did get put in the corner when they acted up. Just the threat of the corner was usually enough.

I did time out for myself. If my child was overwhelming me, I would walk to the bathroom, go inside and lock the door. They are not entitled to my presence when treating me unkindly. I think it's pretty effective when I want to do something outside of my values to remove myself from the situation. I think it sets a good example. My child has learned to remove themselves from the situation and get some alone time too, and will come out when they're ready to be around other people again.
