Jason Molina: The Tragic Genius Behind Songs: Ohia’s “The Lioness”
In January of 2000, Songs: Ohia, the project of Jason Molina, released The Lioness. Ripe with metaphor and deeply personal lyrics, this album is among the many pillars of Molina’s vast career. This is the story of that album, the songs within, and the hint of Jason Molina’s tragic fate 13 years later.

I wondered where it was produced, no offence, but it doesn't sound like a typical American music production. It's so delicate when it could be massive and OTT, especially the guitars, which, for me, are as close to perfect as you'll get. It's almost too small, almost too sparse, but somehow just makes other great records sound brutal and harsh in comparison. I notice this every time I listen.

It's striking the way you describe his personality, it's so similar to how his friends describe Elliot Smith's.

This is an awesome video about one of my favorite musicians. Thank you for covering him and sharing his stories with the world, as there seems to be very little about him on YouTube.

Good on anyone promoting Jason’s music, but he wasn’t an alcoholic until like 2005. Read Erin Osmon’s book.

I remember discovering Jason Molina’s music and how it got to me straight away. Couldn’t stop listening and just had to find more. Hours it took me. And then I started looking into the person Jason Molina and found out he had already died. Man, my heart broke. Together with John Frusciante, Molina is up there on the top of my favorite artists list. Love this deep dive into the Lioness. Thanks!

Molina has always been one of my favorite songwriters, I listened to his song Heart My Heart the other day and just broke down and wept.

Totally agree. We laugh inside even though we may be listening to these songs… it's cathartic. Molina was a genius. He knew

Oh my God, Molina's shadow looms so long over us, and it hurts to know Oberlin and Lorraine, Ohio, and then Muskett Street in Indianapolis were the bookends to this tragedy.
