Cymbal opinion: they all sound like different types of stacks & chinas. Far too dry for me.
The video is brilliant though as always 😀

This was so impressive to watch. You don't have too much expectation when a drummer is just sold on being Janet Jackson's drummer, but this guy has serious chops. He could join a prog metal band tomorrow and have a cult following. His choices were so imaginative and his execution was perfection. You could believe this is how the actual song sounds, he had so many touches that sounded so Portnoy. Breathtaking display.
Also, I'm so glad you guys let him swap cymbals, that first set were giving him absolutely nothing back and it was so frustrating to hear 😅 maybe the mix wasn't quite right, but a cymbal that dry has no place here, especially those crashes

For someone who "doesn't play metal", J-rod not only nailed it. He killed it! We have to see Mike's reaction now!

If this dude learned some of the nuances of the genre he would crush it. Imagine him playing in a band like Neurosis.

June 4, 2026 at 8:38 am
Absolutely hands down one of the greatest drummer's I've ever seen in this channel and totally worth all the praise!!! Epic and totally impressive stuff!!! Love the groove and the non-metal approach comparing to Portnoy's original parts!
@motbus3
June 4, 2026 at 8:38 am
It was misleading to tell him about "metal" and not "progressive metal" it totally changed the final take.
Also 10 minutes songs for someone not used to that style is pretty insane

Dream Theatre is an example of creative degradation, self-plagiarism and absolutely empty music filled with instrumental masturbation.

What a cool performance. He did some really interesting things, especially that 7/8 groove he locked into. What a beast and humble drummer.

Really cool parts smashed together, like I can see Dream Theather putting out all of these licks and beats to a song or several songs . He's really taking advantage of the progressive genres variety. It's only awkward in the same sense that all of these blind, on the spot compositions of Drumeo tend to be that without bands input there isn't always a solid throughline to the "spirit" of the song with the transitions – further underlined with Dream Theaters tendency to underline and solo every instrument

June 4, 2026 at 8:38 am
Damn, those cymbals are really dry. Maybe they should look on the meinl drys. They sound definitely better then those sabians
