Dilla time! The beauty of his swing is that it doesn’t happen within any isolated drum part. Hi-hats and snares are almost always played straight. It’s how he places the kick drums or snares in relation to the hi hat is where the swing happens. It’s something you hear very simplified in early 80s funk. But Dilla made it an entire science! RIP to the god producer 🙏🏽

Is it hiphop? Call it "beats" or call it whatever you want – it's MUSIC.

He was def inspired by DJ Shadow, RJD2, DJ Krush, etc.

I'd like to think maybe since he knew he might not have long left on earth, that he went all out with Donuts…

Whatever the story is… rest in peace, JD. You left a huge mark on us beat-heads and the music world.

I love that i was just in Detroit and now we are diving into a Detroit legend! Sad to say they had closed Motown for upgrades and expansion like 2 days before we got there.

It took me a good portion of the day to finish watching/listening to this and wow, bro I learned quite a bit. Heard songs I had not heard in a while and ones I had never heard. Now with certain songs I cannot unhear the samples they are in the forefront. I love so many genres and cannot wait to see what's next.

When i finally got to the end I jumped on the drums and went all Dilla instrumentals for about an hour (until my hand started killing me). I usually celebrate black history month in February only listening to black artists, and this month is no different only now I drum to backing tracks of mostly black artists or inspired by or sampled by black innovators and pioneers !

I am having such a great time with these past weeks with Patreon and Camp Digs and beyond. I would love to see you cover and dive into artists like Sade, Eddie Kendricks (and all the Temptations), Das Efx, Miles Davis, Buddy Miles (The incomparable drummer for Jimi Hendricks Band of Gypsys) for that matter some Hendrix, Beastie Boys, Prodigy, Alchemist, Mobb Deep, The Lox … I dunno I am just throwing names out as they come to me! 😎 Thanks to you my Playlist is growing fast! One of my Amazon Playlists is like 3k + songs totaling over 260 hours of music!! 🎵🥰🎶 That's just one list!
I miss the days of buying mixtapes on Canal Street in NY or having the latest DJ Clue, Green Lantern, Funk Flex or whatever and being the first one on the block to have that "New $hit!" I used to take trips to Florida and they knew very little about so much NY Hip-Hop. I remember they had a crew down there called "Jam Pony Express" dem dudes used to get some new stuff sometimes, they would Amp the Bass on the track to the point of distortion though and then talk all over the tracks!

😒😅 Anyway I will be listening again through the week, I am glad this was available on YouTube also that helped me get through. One Love! RIP Dilla Happy Heavenly Birthday tomorrow!

The greatest interpetation of Charlie Parker's "Billie's Bounce" is by JJ Johnson & Stan Getz live at the Opera House (it's on Spotify), check it out!! 👍🔥 It's a Hard Bop Jazz interpretation (hard bop jazz has a faster rhythm than regular jazz!!) And while you're at it, check out "Crazy Rhythm" on the same live album, it's AMAZING, one of my favourite hard bop jazz tracks of all time!! 🔥🔥🔥 TURN IT UP and let your mind be blown!! 😎👍
