Italy’s Radical Solution to Extreme Inequality

More Perfect Union | March 18, 2026

Behind Italy’s beauty (and parmesan) is a radical tradition of cooperatives. In some areas, they make up nearly a fifth of the GDP. We went to Emilia-Romagna, one of the richest regions in the country, to investigate how Italy’s workers built a more democratic economy.

Many thanks to the Bologna Film Commission and the City of Reggio Emilia for the support and for the assistance.

More Perfect Union is an Emmy-winning, nonprofit newsroom whose mission is to build power for working people. Here’s what that means: We report on the real struggles and challenges of the working class from a working-class perspective. We attempt to connect those problems to potential solutions. We report on the abuses and wrongdoing of corporate power. And we seek to hold accountable the ultra-rich who have too much power over America’s political and economic systems.

0.001% of the global population, about 60k people, own and control more than the "lowest" halve of the world's population, about 4 billion people.
If we'd tax 1% on billionaires alone, we could end the world's hunger.
If we'd tax 2% on anyone worth more than 100 million dollars we could have ON TOP:
Universal Primary Education > ~$150 Billion > Covered
Global Green Energy Transition > ~$200 Billion > Covered
Basic Healthcare for All > ~$100 Billion Covered

How rich are you making all these videos? With over1.3 million subscribers. How much are you donating to less fortunate people? How big of house how many cars do you have?

Meanwhile I'm here at my McDonald's trying to get people to be willing to tell the manager that she needs to listen to us or she'll run the store into the ground – and they are too afraid to even do that, even we all agree that is what is going on

So wait, let me understand. The factory was running smoothly since, at least, the eighties. Then bought out by foreigners and forced to close? Well that's just economic colonialism, we got pushed out of the way to make space for people in another country. Good on the factory workers to fight.
