Left wing people are so into homosocialisation that it makes them isolate anyone right of Stalin. Right wing people are happy to be friends with anyone.

The evil Dr Phil would have episodes about parental estrangement and in the comments were tons of crying parents blaming their children for it. Cracked me up how many of them would announce their toxicity.

When she was talking about conservative parents controlling their kids all I could think of was that clip of Sean Duffy telling his daughter she's not going to Harvard.

Crazy! What is wrong with people?! I have seen fantastic acceptance in my family and I can not imagine the people in my family not putting aside their disappointments or differences to be able to be with each other for a dinner or weekend. My mother invited the ex wife for Thanksgiving, year after year, because all the children would be at her table and the ex would be alone. Mind you, my mother was the hostess that most people don’t know how to be. But what an example to the rest of us!!! And I will add, now that I tend to be the one who gathers the folks, she taught me to delegate! Everyone should bring a dish! Guests help straighten up!

Great topic, and more of us feel the trauma of having family members we no longer connect with, than data shows.
The effects are different for everyone, but it is clear this is a consequence of the last 10 years of having the most vile human ever to walk the planet take over the airwaves and government.
Division and hatred among the populace were the plan, so they could plunder the nation for its wealth.

I was attacked by my birthing human's inseminator with a beer bottle for being transgender. After 10 minutes of beating, head trauma and blood loss told me that it was in my best interest to defend myself.
I knocked my birthing human's inseminator out and wgen he came to, he got a handgun to finish the job he started.
In the wake of that, the person who gave birth to me joined up with her siblings to coerce me into lying to the DA to get the attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon and commission of a felony with a firearm and five other charges dropped during Herr Trumpf's first Fhurership.
It all happened because I had left an abusive wife who outed me to my parents the night I left her.
My two kids are the only birth family with whom I still speak.

Leigh mentioned smartphones, but I think this is something else we can lay at the feet of social media in general. Before, if a relative had some kind of opinion you disagreed with, even virulently, it was easier to kind of bury the disagreement since it likely only came out occasionally. Now, with people posting and reposting every vile meme that crosses their path, it keeps the disagreements closer to the surface and people are more quick to jump in and it's harder to keep the peace.

I’ve always been confused about the argument that it’s the fault of children. I mean, YOU raised your children! If you don’t like the way your children behave as adults then maybe that’s on you?

Family estrangement has been around as long as there have been families. That's not new. Half my town was founded by people who hit the Oregon Trail, said sayonara, and never saw their families again.
There are people estranging from Trump-supporting family members because this is a question of morals, and those Trump supporters are whinging about it.
The "rise" can be attributed to the rise of social media, where people can now talk with each other about abuse and give support to each other. It didn't help that the Wall Street Journal and then Oprah Winfrey gave a platform to one of the leaders in what I call the Estranged Parent Industrial Complex, the so-called "Doormat Mom" who made a mint off her book after she got attention from them. All sorts of copycats have arisen here since then.
If you look for "estranged parent" on YouTube, you'll find a plethora of parents blaming everything on their adult offspring, with the caveat "abuse is whatever it was I didn't do."

James Dobson taught Christian parents to be physically and emotionally abusive to their children and now has to teach them how to deal with being estranged from the same children.

This is absolutely true. I can't tell you how many times I've been told "but she's your mother, you should be able to just forgive her." She literally let her bf sexually abuse me for years, and she blamed me. I was 15 when it started. This is only one example too.
Not to over-share here though, but this hits home and I'm genuinely glad to hear someone talk about it.

Told my mom I was going to therapy. First thing she said was “as long as you don’t use to to say I did everything wrong and cut me off”. My mom knows I was emotionally abused by my coach for years and have lots of relationship trauma. And her first instinct was “oh I’m the problem”

The right-wing of politics has become Vile. Or to use one of Mom's great phrases, "They're full of Piss and Vinegar!" In many cases it's beyond sad. When people become that self-righteous, they have tunnel vision for only what they want to see, and will only listen to what they want to hear. Zero communication, no talking things thru, working them out. But frankly, it's just like their politics. "Our Way Or The Highway!" And people can't, and should never have to live that way. Then they're, "Too Woke!" I swear, FOX Fake-news/Propaganda must pay bonuses for words they can label, Democrats and Progressives with. I don't know anymore… 🙄

It is NOT political. W huh do Americans make everything into a political issue? It’s so annoying.
I am a Gen X, very leftist, queer, trauma survivor, therapist estranged parent. My offspring and I are politically very much aligned. We embrace the queer community. They (singular) did not estrange because of the influence of social media or politics, or a therapist. I am certain we are the norm, not the exception. It’s not political.

It's about heirarchies. Conservatism is, at its core, all about maintaining heirarchies. Fascism is the embedding of this in society through Nationalist ideology, and legal enforcement of social and economic heirarchies.
Kids are to OBEY their elders. Women are to OBEY their husbands. The elders OBEY the authorities. The authorities OBEY the politicians. The politicians OBEY the Capitalists.
Oppose this and you will be destroyed.

I think it’s also worth considering that republicans are working to dismantle social security benefits which will further impoverish their voting base, and so it’s useful to frame the adult children who go no contact as the villains. Republican politicians want to be able to say it’s these adult children who have abandoned the their trump voting parents, rather than the system their parents voted for.

The problem could be that 'we' spend our whole life suspended in a stale old reality/world! Then that reality/world changes the new generation adapts while Sean Hannity looses his narrow phucking mind! And those on the right do not accept change easily but, throw in age and you can expect incoherent grumpy grumblings!

I've been estranged from my white supremacist mother for about 7 years, we tried family therapy once during that time, I got the therapy for us, took it seriously. She did not, every time we started to dig into something she cried victim, when it was literally just talking about her literal abuse that she inflicted as a child. So manipulative she got the family therapist to bend over backwards to the point of catering every session to her. She gaslit, lied, manipulated. Completely rewrote history, and I genuinely believe she believes her own made up garbage. It put me back YEARS in personal therapy, but also in another way progressed it super far, to the point where I almost didn't care anymore, which was one of the hardest steps to get through.
I've heard a lot of estrangement theory, psych professionals talking about it, also the crying from the estranged parents…. I think this is one of the shortest and most productive videos I've heard on the subject, I can actually send this to people and they can quickly understand a lot of the major points I'd trip over myself trying to explain.
Thanks for having this talk. 💜
