Is It Possible To Survive The Music Industry?!

Justin Hawkins Rides Again | April 24, 2026

How do you survive the rock & roll lifestyle? Dave Mustaine was interviewed by Joe Rogan recently about the dark the side of the music industry. They touch on why it is so difficult to survive in this industry, and how it’s possible to navigate it. What is it about the “rock & roll” lifestyle that leaves people so damaged and often in need of “self-medicating” substances? Has anything changed? Do we still glorify the strung out rockstar? Do we enjoy the car-crash? Tell me what you think.

I think you're spot on about the fascination with the self-destruction of talented people. The 70s was an era where actors, footballers and musicians were in the papers as much for their exploits as their talent. I almost feel as if it's some sort of jealousy by the masses and they want to see stars fail. It's all a little depressing, we should want creative People to thrive, but when people saw George Best when he was trying to get sober what did they do ? Offer to buy him a drink

    Justin,
I think you would love jiu jitsu. Not sure if you have tried it yet, but it would be worth it. The being “in the moment” while trying to break your partner’s arm or defending against being choked to death. There is nothing quite like it. It is good fun, quite physical and mental, and it brings a sense of calm and confidence to your life, probably from all the love hormones you get from hugging and choking your training partner. Let me know if you have tried it. I love it. 😂

I remember watching a documentary from 1973, The Who's Quadrophenia US tour. Allegedly, Keith Moon had taken a mix of sedatives and booze during the concert and passed out on the drum kit. Two roadies carried Moon off stage. They put him in a shower, sent him back on stage, and he passed out again. It was really hard to watch. Sad, great drummer plays with a lot of feel and conviction, can't learn that in textbooks.

Dave mustain was like, why did agree to talk to Rogan when he has no real interest in music, joes only interested in the drugs you did, the girls you slept with, any salacious gossip and a small helping of a conspiracy theory, lol

Looking at the bigger picture, is it possible to survive the 21st century? What would be your motivation to try — and why would you want to, given the sterile returns that our "society" has become addicted to? :0/

I wish I could find an audition for a drummer coz I'd probably do ok vs all these youtube technical wizards showing off but totally stroking their own egos and sometimes playing amazingly but also really out of pocket

He's always asking questions about drug use and talking about drugs, he finds them amusing. He's talked about his LSD trips, doing shrooms, and all the weed he smokes but likes talking about psychedelics and doing ayawasca.

Well 😮drugs ave always been a part of my life same as rock they go hand in hand in marriage like a horse and carriage 😅funny i know 🙄but now the serious bit ..I wasn't joking when I said about the drugs .I've been on thyroid tabs all my life coz I was born without the gland I've done coke its shit just burning holes in your pockets so the money can drop out along with the brain cells ,never done heroin ,never wanted to despite listening to the music of nirvana ,jimi hendrix to name just a few of my inspirations. dunno, I've just always like how it opens doors in your mind when you shut your eyes ,take a nice big lug on a spliff or bong lay back and listen to the screaming guitars and heavy doubled up beats of taylor hawkins or dave grohls drumming ,im partial to a beer or cider ,some spirits but not all🤮and definitely no brown in sight ,only green and purple haze ..lovely and chilled ambient atmospheric euphoria ..love it

The most honest conversation regarding drugs I've seen has been Phil Anselmo speaking to kids at Loyola University about his heroin addiction. You should watch that one and react to it.

I had to pause while I found and put on my pedant hat. Before the recorded music industry it would have been the music publishing industry. There is a difference in stigmatism and astigmatism, .

BTW, Alice Cooper was so heavily into alcohol in his early days that he threw up blood every day. Through the help of friends, family and New York Hospital (psychiatric ward) he was able to become sober and remains sober.

Astigmatism is an anomalous curvature of the cornea, not a bulging eye, Joe Rogen’s ‘early days of R&R probably means Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, Hank Marvin. He looks old enough. How are you, Justin?😊

I couldn’t stop thinking about the Happy Mondays when they were talking about the manager dropping the artist for doing too much drugs and getting another band. I don’t know why.

i think Daves biggest problem is his entire life is sort of obsessed with feeling like he was screwed over by Metallica and h never got a fair break. i think trying to get some sort of revenge is his entire motivation to even exist, he can not move on and be happy. he has a NEED to try and show them up to try to beat them. it doesnt matter how successful he and Megadeth are or how many people love them, none of that matters because he just cannot stop dwelling and obsessing over how he feels he was wronged. and its kind of strange because i cant honestly imagine them ever lasting anyway if he had stayed in Metallica, because his ego and Lars egos and James ego would never have been able to keep going for long. but seriously he is a huge star yet basically he has wasted his life, just obsessing and obsessing and obsessing over one little moment when he was kicked out of a band. then understandably obsessing over those guys using his songs. then YEARS of each side trashing each other constantly. but seriously he can not move on with his life over one DECADES old rivalry, they are all old men now and i guarantee you he still has bad stress dreams about it. it has hurt his life more than the drugs or the alcohol OR the cancer.
