Is It Possible To Make Bass Playing Cool?!
Today I’m reacting to a very cool video my producer sent me of @CharlesBerthoud demonstrating the evolution of all bassists. Is it possible to make playing the bass look cool? I think Charles may be the person who is doing that. He is incredible.
Here is a link to his video: https://youtu.be/y9UTShorzKQ
Here is a link to Rockin’ 1000 if you’re intrigued: https://youtu.be/Ul8vqaGGnY0

How did I miss this one? I am a bass player and got more work than I ever wanted because of it. I use the guitar to write songs but bass opens the door. Guitarists are a dime a dozen.

Bass comes from the Dutch word "bas" which means exactly the same as the English "bass" but both are related to the French "notes basse" which means "low notes". So my question is why do modern bassist all play high notes when someone asks "Do you even play bass, bro?"

Just like it is with guitarists… I'm in my "bass phase" with a fretless since a few years ago.
I had to dust off the guitar the last time I picked it up

Robbie Shakespeare could rock a stadium by playing three notes; you can't be cooler than that.
Get these awful slap players with their squeaky high pitch constant bass solos out of my face… James Jameson could do a better bassline drunk lying on the floor, f*ck slap…

You gotta go for the stoic centre of gravity. Like Entwhistle, Bill Wymann, Toni Levin, or Michelle Steele.

My favourite bassists have always been the one who absolutely f**king go for it, who aren't relegated to a support instrument, but the ones who can carry the band all on their own. Your Chris Wolstenholmes of Muse, your Mike Kerr of Royal Blood, your Georgia South of Nova Twins. Guitarists tend to dominate a band's sound, but there's no real reason why this needs to be so – you can absolutely have it the other way round, with a bassist doing all the legwork and the guitarist filling the support role. Often to the point where you don't even need a guitarist at all (as in Royal Blood).

That's the face the musician makes when they realise they're out of time with the drummer. Doesn't apply to some guitarists clearly. face emoji etc

September 15, 2025 at 8:01 am
yes, play them on ultralight setup
You won't be having the real fun/ cool of bass fights(feelin the fishs fight) if you're imitating the pros… or something like 60 to 80lbs of line power upon apoor 3lb bass with the drag locked all the way thru 😢 ….
…. i know… looks super duper boring. You can see the habit at play when you watch around how most bass fishing content on the internet, they'd reel a trophy largemouth like it's a sock or something! That ain't "playing fish", like they use to call it in UK scene…. playing fish for the sake of fun… But in case with Americas' bass scene, 99 out of 100 fishons seems absolutely zero fun, personally for me(seems like yours too as you posted asking this)
But I absolutely understand why and what with it; the case with bass fishing tackles being on edge/ultra-heavy all the time. As all black bass tend to settle around/near tight covers and weedy area such as lily pads and etc. , you gonna need those thick diameter braids(compare to same sizes mono, braid turns the lb-age up, like triplet) to be able to jerk out of unfortunate snags on weeds, water grasses, and etc.
Anyway, if you're still eager to hav some fun with bass, it's very easy! Do the stuff on ultralight tackles, no more than 10lbs Id say, and that's at the leader! Try that on bass, you'll make bassing cool…
Make bass fishing cool again? 😅
Hope this help some 😊
