Metal Pilgrim | March 31, 2026

Vote for the Best Metal Album of 2024 here – https://metalpilgrim.net/blogs/news/vote-for-the-best-metal-album-of-2024

Iron Maiden hit the charts in the UK again with their 80s releases Powerslave and Somewhere in Time… 40 years after Powerslave’s release. Tonny Iommi opens up about what he actually thinks about Thrash Metal and specifically about such bands as Metallica, which opens up an interesting discussion.

Avantasia announces their new album Here Be Dragons to be out February 28, 2025 via Napalm Records. And ex-Nightwish bassist and vocalist Marko Hietala announces his new record Roses From the Deep to be out next year as well.

Meanwhile we’re getting ready to vote for the Best Metal album of 2024, so cast your vote right now. Beast in Black join us for an interview to answer the question about their new album and plans for 2025. New releases by Helloween, Gloryhammer, Elvenking and much more in the new Metal Digest. 10:21 it’s a little to say something to get reactions. Heavy Metal isn’t dying, it’s evolving and morphing while still being alive and well. It’s like everybody is saying Lars Ulrich can’t play drums and never ever could, but that is just not true. But if you don’t say he is crap you’re not “in”.
So I’m definitely not “in” 🤘🏻😉✊🏻

I am also to blame for the rise on the charts of Iron Maiden. In the last few months, I have created from scratch my own personal Iron Maiden Discography on CD. Looking at the age of their members I do not expect it to grow any bigger 😅

Most of this sounds like one band playing a few different albums. Nothing is new these days. Its all cookie cutter formula. True metal is long gone.

Not watched the video yet but saw Iron Maiden are featured and just wanted to get something (very probably unrelated) off my chest…which is that I'm hoping against hope that they'll take a leaf out of Metallica's book and broadcast at least one of their upcoming 50th anniversary shows to cinemas. Considering those dates sold out in about half an hour and with no prospect of any extension, I'd say it's the least they could do. Okay, rant over 😂

Marcos music is kinda boring generic prog metal. Nightwish is on a completly another level than any "symphonic metal" band. Btw, its not real symphonic metal if its just synths and no real orchestration

Metal will never die, brother! All those nominees for Best Metal Album Of 2024 are great! Thats a hard decision but as far as who I personally think the band of today is that has done for metal what Metallica did back in the 80’s, I would have to say that because of the many different sub genres of metal I would have to say each new up and coming band are in that category in their own rights. I dont think there is any one specific band. I think theres many bands that fall in that category.

Last few Avantasia albums were amazing! Especialy Ghostlights and Moonglow, which are one of the best and most atmospheric albums in power metal!
Looking up to their new release!

I'm a curmudgeon, I guess. Most of the newest metal bands are just sheer garbage to my ears. I miss Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Scorpions, Metallica, and all the classic metal bands. (Yes, I know they're still around, but I miss when they ruled the world).

The only recent metal bands I like are Disturbed, Lacuna Coil, and Halestorm. Oh, and on the thrashier side, Merciless Death has some catchy material.

But I can't stand anything with "death," "grind," or "core" in the genre description. Except really old school hardcore punk rock.

The future of metal is Sabaton, Powerwolf, Wind Rose, Warrior Path, Fuerschwanz, Battle Beast and Beast In Black. Powermetal is religion. Invincible Shield, Trollslayer and Wake Up The Wicked have been amazing entries into the greatest metal albumns this year
