Instagram Broke. Now Everything Is CREED.
The story behind Instagram’s weird algorith recommendation involving Creed and how the band had a resurgence in more recent years.

Creed became cool again. Then Instagram started recommending “Higher” for everything. Photos of dinner, pets, and sunsets were getting the same soundtrack, leaving users wondering whether the band had somehow taken over their music suggestions. Instagram eventually acknowledged that the song was being recommended to more people than intended. But the glitch was only the latest twist in a Creed comeback.
In this video,I explore how Creed went from one of the biggest rock bands of their era to an easy punchline, before finding an audience all over again. Was the renewed attention driven by nostalgia, memes, younger listeners, or people finally admitting they liked the songs? The answer is more interesting than simply saying the internet brought them back.
Long before Instagram users were asking why Scott Stapp kept appearing in their suggested music, “Higher” was already enjoying another moment. The Texas Rangers embraced it during their 2023 World Series run, while Minnesota Vikings players used it to get fired up before games. Suddenly, a rock anthem was connected to new memories, new celebrations, and crowds singing the chorus together.
I also revisit Creed’s over-the-top performance at the Dallas Cowboys’ 2001 Thanksgiving halftime show. With aerial performers and a stadium-sized presentation, the appearance gave the internet plenty to rediscover years later. For some viewers, it was hilarious. For others, it was a reminder of exactly why they enjoyed the band in the first place.
That overlap between laughing at Creed and genuinely enjoying Creed runs throughout this story. An exaggerated Scott Stapp impression might get a laugh, but it doesn’t necessarily stop anyone from turning up “Higher” afterward. Sometimes the same dramatic delivery that inspires the jokes is also what makes the song work.
Behind the chorus is another story entirely. Stapp has connected “Higher” to lucid dreaming, a recurring nightmare, and imagining a better world. I look at those explanations and how a song with such a personal starting point became a soundtrack for sports, viral clips, and everyday Instagram posts.
Finally, I separate what Instagram actually confirmed from the theories surrounding the recommendations. The company acknowledged an unintended problem, but that doesn’t mean Creed secretly paid to flood everyone’s feed. It also doesn’t mean an algorithm created the band’s comeback. People were already listening, buying tickets, and singing along before the glitch became news.
From Creed’s original success to their unexpected second life, this is the story of how “Higher” became hard to escape all over again. Instagram just took things a little too far.

I've always liked Creed, and Nickelback. I feel no shame in admitting that. There's a very unusual phenomenon that causes enmity to be directed towards a singular entity. It can likely be attributed to some degree as the Beavis and Butthead effect. It's a social contagion. In this case, I suppose the effects of the virus were reversed.

😂😂😂 I'm not kidding, it took me 2 watches to figure out, who tf the the 4 old guy's were? The one's wearing Rangers jerseys talkin about, "Doing our part, for baseball…" I'm dying, it's the band! They're all old… like me! I'm snorting. 😂😂😂

I was there in the 90s. I do not like Creed. At all. It is corporate right wing, safety rock. It is the soundtrack for rich white boys judges protect when their dates say 'no'.

Creed is good enough to push. Rock bands today can't make an album with a bunch of hits like Creed.

I never needed to hear the jokes to inspire my dislike for them. I just don’t like them. I find their music irritating and extremely over the top…like soap opera over the top. To me they come off as they’re trying too hard….perhaps the video for “Higher” cemented that for me. Plus Scott Staps constant Jesus posing it felt like he was very condescending…like Bono
Versus Nickelback where I feel they never deserved the jokes. Nickelback is a good band with some great underrated songs.

I thought Creed was great during My own prison and Human clay but they got old after that. The song Weathered was good too and that was more due to Mark's guitar work

Artists detest Creed more than anybody because they had to personally deal with Stapp drunk off his gourd, the fans just had to deal with shitty performances

I once had Mark Tremonti's cell number. 😂 (For a radio interview)
Edit – I just checked out of curiosity, and its still there. I doubt its his still, though, as that was almost 20 years ago. 😂

Weathered (2001) is and always one of my absolute favorite rock albums of all time and I AM SO GLAD it’s finally coming to vinyl format for its 25th Anniversary.
Was a band like Creed even ANYWHERE NEAR as MUSICALLY GREAT as a band… like… say… Radiohead??? NO. Of course not, LOL.
But… Creed WERE MOST CERTAINLY MUCH BETTER than Pearl Jam AT LEAST… because when you ACTUALLY listen to Scott Stapp sing… you CAN ACTUALLY UNDERSTAND A SINGLE WORD he is EVEN SAYING… UNLIKE… Mr. Eddie “I wrote Yellow Ledbetter” Marble Voice Vedder… and ONLY OLD-OF-TOUCH Generation Xers who are blinded by NOTHING but NOSTALGIA for everything and anything remotely related to Early-90’s rock music will disagree with my comment.

I consider the Creed/Nickelback hate and backlash akin to the death of disco, or the back-turning on Hootie and the Blowfish. Overkill can lead to a negative counter, and perhaps by 2006-2007, it was just too much for too many people. But now, those people are in their 40s, running marketing and advertising companies, and the songs of their youth are found to be fitting for the emotional resonance they’re looking for.

I remember really liking their first album. But that's about it. I was on family vacation down in Florida and was listening to a local rock station and they played a couple of songs I liked and picked up the album. I don't think it had been out long it was probably a year or more later before I started hearing others talk about the band. They were also the first real concert I ever attended. It was Creed, Fuel, & Finger 11 (LoL) Finger 11 had just gotten signed to same label as Creed's their first album wasn't even released yet. Fuel's biggest hit then was "Sunburn." There might have been 500 people there. The band wore jeans and t shirts and nothing but a few lights on the stage. About 2 1/2 years later they were headlining a huge festival I was at. They were wearing bright silk shirts, leather pants with lights and pyro going off all over the stage. SMH!
