i hate your stupid voices. just talk normal. This sounds immature and detracts from the content, which is good.

Are these properties of the tokens themselves or does sintax come into play? it seems that Indexicals and Demonstratives are definitively associated with a sequence of sounds then there explanatory usefulness is quite limited.

So.. is "He" demonstrative? What about in the context of a paragraph describing "Arthur Wellesley". i.e. "He was the first Duke of Wellington"

i like the direction you are going. linguistics are the window through which we interpret the world. Ive been trying to get through Jacques Derrida's work for quite a while and after extensive study and research into the philosophy of Nietzsche, Heidegger, Freud and the structuralist (Barthes, Foucault, Levi-Strauss) i think that linguistics may contribute to fundamental future conceptualizations of consciousness and perceptions of reality.

What if there is more than one Arthur Wellsley, doesn't that mean that context needs to be provided the same way Demonstratives do?

Arthur Wellseley is also context dependent thou. It is in a cultural context.

Hi Olly!
How would you differentiate an indexical and an anaphora?
Thank you for the continuous stream of wonderful videos!

Don't most words change in meaning depending on the context they are used in? If I talk about "the tree", which specific instance of a tree am I talking about? Well, it depends.

Hmm, if we would compare original concept of sovereignity (apsolutistic institution) to present day sovereignity (institutions within the seperation of powers) would sovereignity then be demonstrative or indexical term? Or did I completely miss the subject? 😀

Arthur Wellesley could indicate ANY person called Arthur Wellesley though.

I you a demonstrative or an indexical. You is always the person you are talking to (making it an indexical, right?) however it sometimes needs demonstration to show that it means a particular person you are talking to in a group of people (making it a demonstrative). Now my head hurts!
