I recently had a major midlife Gen X moment where I realized that all the ‘adults’ from my childhood movies and TV shows… were actually younger than I am right now.
So, today we are gonna play a little game I like to call ‘They Were Younger Than You Are Now.’ A nostalgia quiz for us 70s and 80s kids.

There is another side to finding out how old these people were (or rather, weren't). They look tore up in their 30s and 40s. Most of us still looked like kids at that age.

My friends and I can never get over the fact that we are about the same age as the Golden Girls — only we look so much younger. It's the hair, I think.

Does anyone else remember seeing Charlotte Rae on ER (you may remember her as the older lady who brought kittens with her)? I had no idea she was still alive by then. ER seemed to make it a point to cast several people from hit shows of the 70s & 80s, in guest roles – Ed Asner, Alan Alda, & Bob Newhart, just off the top of my head.

I went down this rabbit hole while watching the All in the Family episode with Edith’s 50th. She asks Archie if she looks like she will be 50. Im thinking “sweetie u look at least 60” then i looked up her age and she was actually 49. 😮. And it’s funny all the FoL girls are the age or older than Charlotte Rae was but look so much younger. “Rudy” from Cosby Show turned 46 last year and thats that age “Clair” was in the infamous bday episode when the kids did “When mom was MY age”. Rudy was like 5 then. Thse kids look good and so does Phylicia. She was younger than her character tho. By the end of the show she was 46 tho and looked great then and now. jean Stapleton looked younger in “You’ve Got Mail” or whatever she was in than she did as Edith Bunker, so her frumpy housewife and that hair aged her too. Bonnie Bartlett looked old as “Grace Edwards” but looked way younger in modern shows when she got to dress in current times not 1800s on the prairie

I think anybody born after 1975ish is gonna have a wildly distorted view of age for various reasons. I constantly marvel at how young we all look compared to how people looked at the same age 40 years ago. We keep looking younger and younger. We're making wildly different lifestyle choices. Remember the adventure racing craze in the early to mid teens? Our parents weren't doing tough mudders in their 40s! It was weird that my friend's parents played softball as adults. Now? The owner of a place i used to work at was in his late 50s, ripped out, and looked 15 years younger than what he was. Whatever magic spell someone is running to keep us all looking perpetually a 30 something, keep it up.

Michael Gross and Meredith Baxter were the exact same age as they were born on the same day. Yeah, I definitely winced a couple of times as I saw the ages on some of these characters from these episodes.

All those older boomer, silent gen and greatest generation actors and actresses smoked like chimneys and aged them rapidly to the point where they were all wrinkly and grey at 40

Estelle Getty(Sophia) was 62 during the time of the Golden Girls and Bea Arthur(Dorothy), her daughter, was 63.

I'm currently older than all but two. I'm looking at 58 in my very near future. Pretty cool lines in a few of those. Ole Grady cracked me up. One of my all time favorite characters.

Sherman Hemsley actually dyed his hair slightly gray to appear old as Isabella Sanford, who was much older than Sherman. This is why I get so frustrated with these oh my God they are so much younger than I thought they were. A lot of factors go into that for one thing, a lot of people these days have more estrogen especially the dudes so they look younger at older ages but yet there is research saying that they’re losing their hair more than other generations

You do realize that Carroll O’Connor and Redd Foxx both dyed their hair even more white to look older than they really are. That is a well-known fact in the entertainment business.

This again. Is the implication that moderns are better looking or more appealing? lol, lmao even. Hmmm 🤔 I think they have to looksmaxx or strive to even get in the ballpark (unfortunately & not their fault) and still don’t have the appeal overall. Modern soft cheeks & looking more teenage might be an advantage in the mirror comparatively ? 🤷♀ , but it doesn’t translate to people sitting down to watching any memorable entertainment.

Nowadays the age of celebrities is readily available online whereas decades ago we didn’t know as much about their personal lives just the characters they portrayed so I never had any idea how old they were in real life. It is surprising to think about it now.
