The United States is no longer classified as a liberal democracy. Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Anne Applebaum reveals that the global democracy index now places America in the same category as countries in South America, downgraded from a full liberal democracy to an electoral democracy, a system that is somewhat less free and could slide further.

Applebaum explains what Americans would actually notice if their country continued down this path. She describes a real case from Hungary where a business owner was asked to sell his company to a politically connected buyer. When he refused, his windows were broken, his children were harassed on the way to school, his employees developed sudden legal problems, and his company faced a wave of regulatory inspections and tax audits until he eventually gave up, sold, and left the country. She draws a direct parallel to what is now happening to American companies, including the AI company Anthropic, which faced immediate government retaliation after refusing to hand over access to its technology under certain conditions.

She walks through how Trump’s net worth grew from $2.3 billion when he entered office to $6.5 billion two years later, driven by business deals with foreign governments including Saudi Arabia, where the Trump family’s commercial partners are the same people negotiating political arrangements with the US. She argues this represents a level of presidential corruption that has no precedent in American history.
