This entire process, from the time they start forming the letters, is surprisingly similar to Alec Steele making the damascus barrel with his name running through it.

Hi Tom. Just wanted to say that this was incredibly fascinating. Best episode so far, if anything it may be tied with the bell casting.

I had a book of science experiments as a child and one of them was making "sugar glass" (or maybe it was a "sugar pane"), boiling sugar and letting it set into a transparent sheet. Was fun to do and see the unexpected result (really was transparent! And a novelty to eat!) but quite dangerous for a kids book maybe! Also would love it if such an iconic symbol of Lancashire/Blackpool was invented by a Yorkshireman. Also London Labour and the London Poor mentioned, if it's the same book I'm thinking of I love reading through it and hearing what life was like for all these pig foot street vendors etc.

I'm watching this, and I noticed that right after he mentions that sugar burns are really bad because they can stick to you, it then cuts to a clip where two men are wearing short sleeved shirts. short sleeves!

"There was less concern about sugar"? As an American, it is hard to imagine a time or place where there was less concern about sugar! That's why most Americans have diabetes, and even when they have diabetes, they still aren't concerned about sugar!

I Didnt realize how much i missed your videos until you came back. Ive been consumed by the nonsense of American politics recently and its nice to get a friendly and interesting view of somewhere else. Anywhere else.

Why would 'hard candy' be "difficult to translate to any other dialect of English?" You gotta stop being so dramatic.

Taffy is popular at some retro or otherwise nostalgic seaside gift or candy shops , often saltwater taffy. Different from the more mass market taffy candies.
