You want counter- indoctrination? One Piece shows us one way to do it. Progressive Gen Z protesters fly it for good reasons. Luffy claims he's no hero, but he's all about liberating his downtrodden friends from rich and powerful oppressors.

The problem with edgelords is they cannot come up with anything new or original. It's like they're going down the road of the boomer, which ironically a lot of them are. Edgelords are the new age "dad joke" that everyone groans at

I think one way of putting your final point is, "You cannot subvert by obversion." The tighter your control over the message, the less power it has. This is related to Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak's notion of the subaltern. If you want people to listen at all, you need to signaljack. Sometimes that means burying your point beneath a layer of irony, or exploding gorefests.

What you are talking about for most of the video is epistemic *responsibility*, which is in direct conflict with epistemic *reality*. I must have watched The Matrix a million times as a parable about being The Chosen One. But it still planted the seeds of how I understand the kyriarchy today. I sometimes wonder if the era of instant gratification has afflicted leftism to the point where we no longer understand that people do not change overnight.

Better Call Saul is my favorite sad white-boy media. If you read through Reddit threads in r/BCS, you see the same misinterpretation of Jimmy/Saul that you mentioned in this vid, with people identifying too closely with Jimmy as a character and justifying his actions. As an example, people will justify the way Jimmy treated Chuck, because Chuck doubted Jimmy and his character. Anyway, as a current/former matza-cell, sad white-boy, I enjoyed your video.

You can have the message be as clear as a neon sign and some edgelords still don’t understand. We are in 2026 and I saw some conservative dudes still thinking Fortunate Son is some patriotic U.S military song… like they straight up just don’t even listen to the lyrics.

I don’t comment very often, but I really wish Mr. Signifier and I could have a conversation about the second Joker movie. I have so many opinions about that movie and I loved watching it.

I’m commenting within the first 15 mins to thank you for explaining what an edgelord is because I never heard of that before. I’m 33 but I feel so out of the loop sometimes 😅

As a female, it's nice seeing a male creator that can talk about these issues and is not insufferable to watch. There needs to be more "voice of reason" out here.

I think you're right on the drifter/outlaw archetype as one of the precursors. I think it's also the idea of the great man of history that one person can change the world (which isn't precisely false but ignores the web of interconnections we all live in. See: Tolstoy and his critique of Napoleon lol).

But I also think it's this Leopold and Loeb-esque attempt at being the ubermensch. "I'm above your conception of morality". But the hilarious (and tragic) thing they do is end up conforming to a hollow group identity. They wear this role like a wrestler's kayfabe to hide how alone, scared, and broken they are. It makes them feel strong and powerful in a world where they feel like they can't affect any change whatsoever.

If we're gonna wear roles that are above your sense of morality I want more Straw Hats. Luffy doesn't let laws or morality dictate what he does, but he just brings joy everywhere he goes and helps others become their best self.

As a gen z adult, 24. You did a thing for the gen alpha. You gotta take it back to the vine days, whip and nea nea, "what are thoooseeee", 69 420 etc etc. You aint lumping me with that skidi pee toilet stuff.

When it comes to media, the best way to make people dislike a certain behavior or group is not my interpreting them as the villains. The way it has to be done is through ridicule and mockery.

Neo-nzis LOVE The Green Room because it depicts them as badass, strong, and as people to be feared. They didn't like Jojo Rabbit because it made the Nzi Party look like silly little bumbling beaurocrats who are silly and dumb. Both those moves are great within their own right.

In this way, I belive that the best way to work against this incel messaging in mock it. The best example I know of this is in the movie Megamind. Hal, who is depicted as a pathetic simp, gains superpowers and when he doesn't get the girl and throws a fit by destroying the city, he gets to remain a simp, but in prison. In Sponge Bob, the villain is a pathetic kittle cucumber with delusions of grandeur that marries a computer and never gets his way. These characters are not idolized by the people who are like them, and sinceboth are depictions in kid's shows, they're supposed to teach children how not to act once they're grown.

As my sister and me came out of ths movie theater after having watched Joker, we discussed the problematic messaging, which is that the actions of Arthur are justified within the narrative.

We had argued that maybe if, at the TV interview, instead of mocking Arthur, the host had just questioned him. If the host was reasonable and empathetic with Arthur, then Arthur would seem unreasonable when, faced with the fact that he couldn't answer for what he did, he kills the host.

This is such a good analysis! In terms of counter-propaganda, unironically: One Piece is such a good example of an battle manga that continually hits you over the head with leftist politics. The way the black characters are drawn leaves a loooot to be desired, unfortunately, but seeing the One Piece boom gives me some hope.

Rather than a piece of edgelord media, I want to recommend a really wholesome anime I watched named, "The invisible man and his soon to be wife." It presents a very progressive society filled with mixed fantasy races living together with still a little friction and prejudice, but in the process of healing.

Am I rhe only one who loved Fight Club because I knew it was satire? Was i the only one who saw toxic masculinity as a cancer destroying bob and the narrator and America from the inside out?

I feel like people are missing the whole part about destroying your own body and living in a shit hole for no reason so you can just be in a different conformist hell scape for… No reason but a different kind of vanity.

22:25 You know waht the funny part is? In latin america "liberal" is just a shor for neoliberal, that we do belive is the "more to the left" thing US politics can produce, but that still is very right. I think it´s funny the dicourse of left X right in US politics cause is just ultraright X Right. Not even center-Right, that we have in Brazil. Somewhat ok internal wellfaire X really shitty racist gov, both could not give a shit about the other countries, Trump just removes the international veil and etiquet.

I think a big thing all media is missing is anything showing how one could be more effective at what edgelords want to accomplish than the edgelords. What have we had since Knight Rider, MacGyver, and Quantum Leap that actually showed characters solving problems without violence? Have we ever had a movie with an edgelord character with a healthy external concern that had a non-edgelord character that did something about that issue?

I don't see media portraying solvers of real world problems without violence. Now, maybe I'm missing it, I do live in a rock. But I don't hear people talking about anything like that. I think a lot of these people with no solutions to their problems are going down the path they're taking because their options, as far as they see it, are do nothing or act out. They have no workable plan. I think the people making most of our media are probably intentionally not giving them workable plans.

    Btw I hate edgelords

Heinleins work is not fascist, it's actually very much advocating for Liberty to be directly tied to responsibility, and that voting and holding political office should be earned privileges that carry the weight of responsibility rather than the default state of affairs we have where politics is downstream of corporate capture and legalized corruption.
