Hypocritical Republicans are Flip-Flopping Over Alabama’s IVF Laws After Major Backlash

Hysteria | August 10, 2025

This week on Hysteria, Erin and Alyssa get into the Republican response to Alabama’s IVF law, Jill Biden’s new federal initiative, Olivia Rodrigo’s new reproductive health fund and more. Then, Washington Post journalist Taylor Lorenz joins to talk about her viral interview with Libs of Tik Tok.

Political commentator and comedy writer Erin Ryan and former White House Deputy Chief of Staff Alyssa Mastromonaco are joined by a bicoastal squad of funny, opinionated women to talk through everything from reproductive rights to romcoms. They break down the political news of the week, plus the topics, trends, and cultural stories that affect women’s lives. New episodes drop every Thursday. Get in touch: hysteria@crooked.com.

I tried to get a tubal ligation when 26 in NYS in 1976. I was certain didn’t want kids. I was told unless my age times number of my children equaled 100 I couldn’t have it done! Well never had kids and had to suffer for years on pills

I'm frustrated with this entire issue because of the part that no one is talking about. Lawmakers are NOT the only ones that should be blamed. There are many women out there who are anti abortion who are up in arms about the IVF ruling, and it pisses me off. The women who are crying the loudest are the same ones who have used IVF to have a baby but they also staunchly pro life. And I have zero sympathy. So many people only care about the issues that affect them directly. They are willing to take away someone else's rights but expect their own to be protected. Because we are now forcing women to give birth to unwanted babies why can't they just adopt one of them instead? Those babies matter too. Far more than an embryo created in a Petrie dish frozen in time. If society wants to see all of these babies born then they have an obligation to make sure that those children are cared for. I see this ruling as an unexpected and unwanted result of what they fought for and people can't have it both ways. It should be all or nothing in my opinion, because it's not right. I also have a hard time getting behind issues that only apply to a select few. Privileged people with money in particular. Cause where I come from infertile women have no options at all. They can't afford IVF, and aren't considered to be worthy to adopt either due to lack of resources.

Alabama has a piece of Shit Governor; she is nothing but an old southern redneck ignorant goat. Another, a religious faker, on the money, takes and signs anything if she is given enough money. Gov. Ivey is another old south redneck bitch. There is no such thing as pro-life, plus the Doctors can not be doctors because the government can tell them how to practice, what to practice, and who they can practice. We are now in the Days of High Cotton, slavery mentality, and politicians more corrupt than the KKK ( K as in K Ivey ) all one and the same.

Not only do they probably fight the insurance companies, I’m sure the insurance f!$) s with them tremendously if they help at all. Then they get this crap on top.
As a society we freaking hate ourselves horribly. Why? Money probably and greed and power dynamics playing a huge part. Like 99%

I think the key reason an embryo in a womb can be considered different from a frozen embryo is because the former is now on the path of development, the same path every other human started on. The frozen embryo does have the material makeup that other humans have but is not on that developmental path.

I was 27 when I wanted to get my tubes tied. I had just given birth to my 2nd child. I had Drs refuse to do it because I was too young. The Dr who finally agreed, made me have a counseling session first and my insurance made me wait 30 days. This is after I had and was raising 2 children, they still made me jump through hoops.

They need more kids so they have more cogs in their wheels of fortune. End greedy self serving but very talented fraudster leaders. Many believe who/what trimp was when he was on some show

They change their policy because it directly affects the votes then as soon as they retain power they back track to their original policies of ban and control.

I have one good story! My doctor asked me if I was sure, but she then went ahead with it. I live in NH. I'm sure it doesn't happen for everyone, but we did it right up here at least once!

NO! THEY HAVEN'T READ IT! The majority take their opinions from their talking heads like they do their pastors — "I don't need to actually read the whole bible, cuz I learned about it in church". But church skips over entire books of the Bible if they don't fit the narrative they want. And that's their eternal soul on the line! So no, most of them don't read the Republican documents, and they don't look at how politicians vote. They just listen to the stories. Then they try to do what Tuberville did and have it both ways, despite the concepts being mutually exclusive.

It matches their concept of freedom… I believe in freedom, just not for everyone.

And Tommy Tuberville…such an embarrassment to Alabama. "Coach," it's over! The Alabama Supreme Court…an embarrassment to the United States of America. Just my humble thoughts….

How about the women reps introduce bills that require the old fart men , who oppose women's reproductive rights, are required to have vasectomies? That would be a good start! yes? LOL
