Or finally make the guy with a billion rocks pay tax until everyone can tell how much a billion is.
Or yeah bad timeline, no tax on the evil, we can do that, too, okay buddy.

Sisyphus wanted to be immortal like the gods and in a way he got what he wanted. He pushes the rock up every day like Helios drives the sun across the sky each day. For the lives of the gods are lives of great repetition. Men are not strong enough to indulge in great repetition but children are. Whenever a child likes something they say "again, again!" Perhaps God says every morning giddy as a child, "do it again" the sun, and every evening "do it again" to the moon.
Sisyphus became like a minor god.

"It is during that return, that pause, that Sisyphus interests me." – Camus
What do you do with the moment after you've failed again? Most people remember Sisyphus for the boulder. Camus didn't. In The Myth of Sisyphus he says the part that interests him is the walk back down, when the rock has rolled to the bottom and Sisyphus follows it with empty hands. He calls it the hour of consciousness. Nothing is being pushed, nothing is being achieved, and for that reason it is the only moment Sisyphus fully sees his situation. That is where his freedom lives, not in the effort, but in how he walks back to it. We spend our lives trying to get the boulder to the top. Maybe the real question was always how we come down.

Guys, you're missing the point.
Sisyphus deserves his fucking punishment.
That's the whole story.
The gods ended up giving him exactly what he wanted: an eternal arena to waste all his time and energy trying to get one last "fuck you" in after spending his entire life outsmarting them.
That's the fucking joke.
So remember, if you're not a psycho, houseguest-murdering, evil bastard king like Sisyphus who cares nothing more than to establish dominance (over his house-guests no less), the story isn't about you.
…Evil boulders in the underworld are for ACTUALLY EVIL PEOPLE.
Don't get tricked into mistaking the normal fucked-up parts of your lives for some evil boulder the gods sentenced you to push.
And DON'T waste your time comparing yourself to Sisyphus. It's a goddamn looshtrap.
Step away from the rock, people. You're not in goddamn Tartarus, and you never will be, cuz that shit isn't even fucking real.
Real talk

who cares how other people imagine sisyphus state of mind to be. only what sisyphus thinks of himself matters, and he's in a rut with absolutely no way out. what's worse is that he's already damned to hell so he can't even end his own life because it's already been ended, determined to this torturous neverending cycle. other people's perceptions don't change his reality – but if seeing someone elses likely torture makes you feel good about yourself then who cares what he thinks in the first place, right?

I would be curious to hear your thoughts about Oliver Gloag’s new book Forget Camus. I think it’s an interesting bit of insight into Camus, his popularity, and issues with the foundation of his philosophy. Would you consider responding to it at some point?

I believe Sisyphus is happy because he likes the actual action of pushing the rock up the hill. The rock rolling down every time shy of the top and the physical toll count as suffering, but the enjoyment of the process is still there. And that pleasure outweighs the suffering.
So, to get why he should be happy, the point isn’t to focus on him almost making it to the peak just for the rock to drop back down—with zero output and everything being pointless. The focus has to be on the physical sensations, on the senses. Drop the obsession with productivity and just feel the pleasure of the journey.
That’s why I think Sisyphus is happy.

Why did Sisyphus even try pushing it at all? No one has even asked this to my knowledge. It's hell so presumably Hades or some such would provide some greater torture should he not? But he's already dead. Is meaningless work > meaningless torture. I don't think it's so simple. And if he's obliged to push it, most of the Camusian analysis falls apart.

Ah yes, nothing more inspiring and motivating than than the character of a fictional story, being forever mocked and condemned by fictional Gods to an eternity of struggle and suffering… Stories like this one remind me of why I’m an atheist.
