Article 13, now for some reason named Article 17, is an Internet censorship provision in the EU’s copyright directive ostensibly meant to enforce copyright protection, but necessitates the implementation of strict content filters on any site with user submitted content such as YouTube, Facebook, Reddit, 4chan and more.
Although this law was only recently passed, it reflects a number of previously failed attempts at implementing such laws in the US. Most famously, SOPA and PIPA were extremely similar laws pushed in the early 2010s by Representative Lamar Smith and Senator Patricky Leahy. Although they initially had bipartisan support, they were fought off by a massive push from the online community.

Byn ow Art13 has been in action for several years and honestly … nothing changed AT ALL, at least not for the user, for creators a few things changed but those changes actually were miniscule und pretty insignificant. The biggest threat still is the completely fucked up DMCA-system whcih can easily abused
The most ironic thing is that the US has lost it's safe harbor status quite a while ago due to overwhelming abuse of it's intelligence services and deep monitoring of traffic xD
EDIT: This happened back in 2016 btw, the USA didn't have any Safe Harbor aknowledgement or benefits since then and it REALLY shows, pretty much every single US Corp has been pulled up in front of several national and international courts regarding their TOS/practices to a degrees, that just the sidenote of "Well, we might have a european court decide about your dealings in europe" already made some of the biggest global companies situated in the US crumble instantaneously xD

It really is sad that people have forgotten along the way that politicians are our employees, not our rulers. They only have the power we give them, it's like 550 people that have squandered all this power they never were supposed to have in the first place. I will never not be angry that Article 13 actually passed. I'm just glad nothing equivalent has happened in the U.S. Hopefully that doesn't change.

I just find a lot of these newer comments hilarious because nothing really ever came of article 13. In fact I believe only like 2 of the 27 EU member states actually implemented a version into law, everyone else didn't bother because it would have been next to impossible to adapt it into there law (proof they have even less of a clue on anything).
Article 13 was more or less a big fuss that didn't go anywhere (there is an odd sense of nostalgia looking back at it).

When it comes to music. I don't think copyright should be inforced at all. Making music doesn't require a herculean effort or millions of dollars. The record industries were just gatekeeping content. They provided no service to musicians at all in the age of digital downloads. Musicians used to perform to feed themselves. That's how it was. That's how it should be. Making big budget movies that require hundreds or thousands of people and thousands of man hours is a different story. Those can't get made without some guarantee that all those involved will get paid for a one time effort. It's not performance art technically. It's content creation. However, the prices of movie tickets are grossly inflated to sustain massively overpaid actors. It drove people to piracy, and for good reason. Streaming services stopped most piracy by providing convenient lower cost access to content. Narrowing access to content as Netflix, Amazon, and other streaming services are doing while driving up costs for less services will eventually drive people back to piracy.

There is no way out for the EU. Why do you think England is still labeled ten times further right than Nazis? Its because of what giant organizations do. Everyone pulls everyone as far down as they can so they can feel tall. Most of these no-name countries in Europe can't even function non-parasytically, let alone consider being better off exiting from USSR 2 – Electric Boogaloo. Not to mention, England is one of the two countries in Europe that are worth knowing exist. Everything else is even more irrelevant than Canada.
Fortunately, cutting your business off from a transnational socualist federation isnt that big if a deal. Not to mention, they're all gonna be tearing their homes down for firewood if we don't just let Ukraine meet its demise soon, so it's not like they'll have access to the internet let alone be valuable users.

Since then, of course, a lot of the suggested legislation has passed in one way or another. A similar fight in Europe was lost a few years later, mainly because people didn't understand what was at stake or didn't care enough.
IDK how it is for Americans, but for someone from Germany, the internet has become a way more restricted and less free place to be. Not a day goes by that I am not halted several times from accessing content or complete websites.

I was in high school as a senior on American censorship day.
As protest I wore Duct Tape on my mouth all day that said "Stop SOPA/PIPA" and my economics teacher LOVED it! I think I was the only kid in school doing anything for the protest, but I didn't speak the entire 8 hours I was there.
