Saturday Night Live is overall “OK” as far as sketch comedy goes. There are many great performers and writers, like Kenan Thompson and Michael Che, but the show rarely takes many creative risks or breaks new comedic ground. However, every now and then they strike gold, as they did with the amazing series of “Black Jeopardy” sketches, which provide excellent commentary on race politics and black culture, without being dismissive or stereotypical. Yeah this was a good skit. If only Tom Hanks didn’t flee the country once all the Epstein stuff came out we could be enjoying his acting greatness. Now we just get the occasional documentary or some new show he’s directed and acted in. He’s finally doing a movie now.
Funniest thing is that most country people and conservatives aren’t racist and irl get along with everyone. Of course just like every segment if humans there are good and bad people. Cause I’m telling you right now if “she does hair” or “if it were me I would’ve whooped his ass when he was young” is black talk than you have more in common with country folk white people than you know😂

I grew up in Detroit. Most of my friends when I was young were black. I dated black girls. But I'm white. I never tried to emulate my black friend's cultural characteristics. Other white guys in school dressed and talked like their black friends; I never did that. I don't "try" to be white, I just try to be myself, and I was accepted for that. Some of the girls I dated even admitted that they went out with me to "see what it was like." Despite my background, I don't claim to have any intimate knowledge of black culture. I am what I am and I appreciate my neighbors for being who they are. That's why the Black Jeopardy sketches are so funny. To me, anyway. They represent the silliness of people claiming to understand someone else's culture without actually living their life.

I also think that the “Doug” episode of Black Jeopardy is a perfect teaching tool for the modern living legacy of the “Poor Whites” political scheme. I’d love to hear some more discussion of that.

5:40 I always hate it when those darn white people "steal" things from black culture! That said, I wish black people could some day steal things from white culture, such as not killing people, not stealing, and not having tons of children out of wedlock.

I don't really care for newer snl episodes but I really love this sketch as it seems to be trying to bring different types of people together. Said as someone who is a generally white, redneck conservative. This is in the Tom Hanks episode.

Whether SNL meant to say it or not, but not all MAGA loving Conservatives are racist bigots.

referring to the pandemic tapes: The taped 'What up with That" was my favorite😅 . . .with Jason Sedeikis dancing over the screen

I do think the Chappelle's show questions were easier, though.

I don’t like the idea that you put forward that the cultural shifts in the west spurred on and often dominated by black people are “stolen” by white people. People want to emulate the popular and dominant culture and the African American culture lends itself to that really successfully. If you wanted to use the word “steal” I feel like the intention is important and I’m pretty sure the intention of these terms being suffused throughout the western world is people just wanting to be a part of something. Wanting to join into the dominant culture and not be left behind. We’re all in this together. Your painting a picture of division where people see outsiders and co-opt their culture and practices, but I’d say it’s more people joining in on the fun with no regard for any supposed boundaries like race.
I don’t know. I’m not saying you meant anything by it, I’m just tired of these little things that feel decisive when none of it really matters. We’re all just people. We emulate our surroundings and that’s how culture develops and changes.
    That’s my perspective anyways.

I think a great idea for another Black Jeopardy sketch would be if a Jewish guy was on the show (maybe played by Andy Samberg). He would get a lot of the questions right and the point of the sketch is that Blacks and Jews have often shared similar experiences within the American context, and at the end, the host and the Jewish guy begin to see themselves as friends/allies with one another. But unfortunately, the final Jeopardy category would be something like “foreign policies in the Middle East” and that would create another divide.

One thing I got from the Tchalla sketch was the difference in experiences of foreign born 1st gen immigrants and diaspora. As an asian american, there is also a gap in the community between experiences of 1st gen immigrants or "fobs" and later generations. the key difference that sets them apart is the cultural and political identities. recent immigrants tend to be very meritocratic and thus believe in institutions and of course, theres this cultural "foreignness" in the way they talk, mannerisms, etc. The part where he talks about the girl becoming a scientist reminds me of the doctor, lawyer stereotype a lot of immigrant parents have. but the one thing that keeps the communities tied is white people bs. the unseasoned food thing is something that i think transcends diaspora and foreign born immigrants well. because food is something they couldnt colonize (despite stealing all the spices)

Great work ! You are one of my favorite YouTubers. I am glad the algorithm lead me to you. I’m not black but I did grow up in urban working class neighborhood so to a degree I resonate with the black experience.

You have to respect Keenan Thompson demanding that SNL hire some more minority cast members. I think it's a damn shame he had to go to the lengths he went to to get it done, though, as SNL should have done that without having to be pressured into doing the right thing. Mr. Thompson is a hell of a comedian, a good man, and a good role model for being a famous comedian. You never hear of him getting drunk and throwing TV's out of hotel windows, or calling his daughter some disgusting names while drunkenly scarfing down a cheeseburger. He also pretty much carried SNL through one of the most atrocious decades it had ever went through, as he was the only reason most of us even watched the show for a loooong time.

First, just because I'm a white American, doesn't mean I'm a thief. I haven't stolen anyone's culture. That may be because I have no talent to enhance by stealing someone else's culture. I guess I did steal some sayings like, "What's happenin'?" and "whatch you talkin' 'bout, Willis?"😊.
Second, if an American creates something (dance steps, music genre, poetry etc) it is part of American culture.
I celebrate Juneteenth. Not as a white man, but as an American who celebrates the freedom of millions of Americans. I don't feel like I'm stealing "your" holiday. Just sayin'😊.

Yes, this skit DOES nail racial commentary, specifically on the Tom Hanks episode about the MAGA guy. It shows black people only accepting someone white when they completely agree with black opinions and narratives, and how white people need to shut up when the topic "Lives That Matter" comes up because, as we all know from the last decade, only once race matters when it comes to people dying, and it damn sure isn't white people. Perfect picture of current-year America.

I've been through a bunch of black Americans doing reaction videos to the Chadwick Boseman Black Jeopardy episode and on every single one the line "and she will probably add something unncessary like raisins" practically puts them on the floor every time. Shows you how spot-on an observation like that is.

“Stolen by white society anyway” by that statement, you just told the world ALL of your political preferences and who you voted for. Seriously dude, that’s such a racist and divisive statement. American culture is free to be shared by all Americans. Period. Saying anything else is completely racist and classist.
