How did the theremin go from science fiction movie soundtracks to influencing pop and electronic music as we know it today? Linda Diaz chats with Michelle Moog-Koussa on how the theremin influenced Robert Moog and led to the invention of the first portable synthesizer. Linda also explores how the theremin works and how it is being utilized today with musician Caroline Scruggs.

Anybody who has worked with high frequency electronics knows how it works. Calibrating that stuff is almost impossible because any move you make has some effect.

I am an actor at the Tovstonogov Bolshoi Drama Theatre in Saint Petersburg, Russia. I had to play the theremin on stage in the play "Elizaveta Bam". It was an amazing feeling of something magical and high-tech at the same time. Playing this instrument always added a huge amount of happiness to me.

While watching I kept wondering if that was what Jimmy Page used. After watching the whole video you confirmed that it is. Thank you for covering this part of music history!!! 💙

I love that it's playing the air. I also loved the name of the instrument, cool to learn it's from a surname.

I literally just picked up a copy of Switched on Bach at a thrift store earlier this week. It’s a wonderful album. It’s my second copy, I found one 3 years ago the beginning of September as well. I guess early fall is early electronica season! 😂

One use of the Theremin I love is Ronnie Montrose using one built in his guitar during the intro for the song Space Station #5 live in 1973. It's the only time of I can recall him using it, but it adds some great atmosphere!

One of the most fascinating, wonderfully weird instruments ever! My son has gotten quite fond of the theremin's sound and actively looks for music that makes use of it!

Wait…. so it's pronounced Moag, like woah, and not Mooog, like a cow moo?! Well this is against everything I've heard in my life! 🤦♂️

Incredible, i believe some very old bands like Kraftwerk & The Beach Boys might have also used the same instrument cause heard similar sounding tones in some of their songs like "I Just Wasn't Made For These Times" & "Neon Lights"

If you want to cover synths it would be cool if you look into the counterpoints to Bob Moog and "East Coast Synthesis", at the same time Don Buchla was creating more experimental sounds making "west coast style synths", this was then followed by Yamaha and the digital revolution of the DX7. Modern production essentially is a fusion of all of these mindsets into a collection of tools.

Shout out to Dr. Madd Vibe (Angelo Moore of Fishbone). His use of the theremin inspired me to use electric paint, microcontrollers, and computer coding to teach high school students about theremins.
