In this month’s Lightning Round video, I look up the deadliest job in the world, how much of your body you can lose and continue living, talk about bias in the media, and why depression might be a good thing.

Ironically, I say in the video that I might have 2 million subscribers by the time my next lightning round video came out, and then it wound up happening before this one went out! This last month has been a bit wild, to say the least. So let me take this opportunity to welcome all the new people and say thanks to the OG viewers as it also marks roughly 10 years that I've been doing this channel on a regular basis. Thanks a million (or two!)

I don't think your math is right on that space travel/crab fishing one, but it isn't that simple. Are you going per trip, per astronaut? What's the most an astronaut will do in their lifetime, 4 or 5? Versus a crab fisherman who will go out several times a season for decades. Deaths per trip is likely space travel, per career is probably fisherman.

Diversity of thought is very important it's what pushes a society forward & depressed, negative people contribute plenty, the optimist invented the car & the pessimist invented the seat belt, optimists created flight & the pessimist invented the parachute all points of view can add plenty of value if they are listened to & not dismissed for "being negative".

12:35 Breaking News is for information or events that are uncommon or unexpected. A news event is simply a recent, notable occurrence that warrants attention for one reason or another.

Sock life hack, buy the same type of sock for your everyday use. Get socks of the same brand, color, ankle height, etc, and buy multiple packs.
Examples, when my kids were little, I assigned a different color sock to each child & bought multiple packs of their assigned color. When doing the laundry, I knew exactly which socks belonged to each child, and because there were multiples of each color it didn’t matter if the mate got lost because they were all the same.
Once every 12 to 24 months I’d pass the socks down the line as the kids grew. It was also much cheaper.
I started doing it for my husband too, who enjoys the ease and has kept up with the system on his own.
As the kids got older and started doing their own laundry they began wearing different socks, but since their laundry is no longer my responsibility, it doesn’t matter if they lose their socks.

When I heard what your BA was in, my ears perked up and I made a guess, then poked around online and sure enough, we share an alma mater! We attended UNT at different times—I earned my PhD there in the early aughts—but I knew I recognised the specific language describing your degree.

I know I’m late to the game, but I don’t have a bladder. I lost my bladder, both ureters, and my prostate to cancer DURING COVID!!! Since I was young (40 at the time) I was healthy enough to get a crazy procedure to create a “Neo-bladder.” No joke, the doctors literally removed two feet of my small intestine and Frankensteined it into a little pouch that looks like a tiny football that, once attached to the necessary… uh, pipes, now acts as my bladder. I pee normally, nobody would ever know. No tubes, catheters, or warm bags of urine strapped to my stomach. Pelvic floor exercises keep me continent, though a really big sneeze can be problematic. What’s nuts is that I have live digestive tissue acting as a bladder! Meaning that I can sometimes feel the peristaltic motion of my new bladder undulating inside me as it still thinks it’s intestine.

I wrote an article (unpublished) fror Science Magazine about the temporal transition of socks while being dried in a clothes drier. My proof was when I darned a message on a sock, and ultimately received an answer from some other time/space. So there!

PBS News Hour still follows the Fairness Doctrine. News Hour is my jam. Also … Joe … you should stop using Google Chrome and switch to Firefox or Brave. And yes I realize you basically work for Google.

I have personal experience with both never losing socks and then losing socks. So my hypothesis is that it is about your habits. When I was underage, living at home, no socks ever went missing. That is because in my family everyone placed their worn socks in the laundry basket and it was never overflowing, so no socks would drop off the pile. The laundry basket was also next to the washing machine. Now, that I live alone, I tend to sometimes just kick off my socks on the couch (for comfort), my laundry basket is in a different room than the washing machine, and my laundry basket is overflowing sometimes so socks fall behind it. I’ve found random socks under my bed, under the couch, in between couch cushions, behind the laundry basket, even under the washing machine.
Conclusion: if you live in a neat and organized way, your socks will find their pairs. If you’re a bit messy, they will go missing. Hope this helps✨

It’s the sock goblins stealing one sock from a pair. They crawl through the vent of the dryer to nab our socks. Sometimes they take up residence in the crevice behind the dryer. Between that and also collecting lint from the trap is why they are also closely associated with dust bunnies, which are creatures made of lint and dust, among other materials found in and under the tight areas of the house. This a scientific fact.

Thank you so much for the info on news networks, I truly found that fascinating. I dont watch any news anymore because I find it all too sensationalized and awful. I wish it were against the law to lie, but we live in weird times…

Cows kill about 300 people a year, while sharks kill about 6. However, if we were to herd and keep sharks in large numbers as livestock, that statistic would be much different.

Oh Joe, How in the world did you come to the conclusion that there was not enough news to go around to cover a 24 hour news network? consider How many countries there are in the world. To this day there is no major 24 hour network that covers even so much as 10 Percent of those countries on a daily basis. Perhaps there are countries that have never had news coverage on a major network in you entire life time.

a sock missing from the washer can always be found between the cushions of the sofa having been transformed into an ink pen. This is scientifically proven by statistical evidence irrefutably!
