How Fela Kuti Turned Music Into a Weapon – DUAL SCREEN AUTO SYNC

Digging The Greats | August 17, 2026

This is a Dual Screen Experience! You’ll need to watch this on a TV or Computer and also have your phone – otherwise this video won’t make much sense.

Use your phone to head to https://sync.diggingthegreats.com/watch/fela-kuti-companion-video to automatically sync the accompanying video. Full explanation in the video above – let me know how you enjoyed this format!

Note: there are strategically placed YouTube ads in between each section of this video and you’ll need to hit stop on your phone during an ad break, and then just hit play to resync again once the video continues. If you have YouTube Premium, you DO NOT need to stop your phone at any point.

This is a re-release of the Fela Kuti video that automatically syncs the companion video. To watch the manual sync video, click here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TqTn-aS9W04

If you don’t know who Fela Kuti is, I’m about to introduce you to your new favorite artist. If you’re familiar with him already, you know he invented a new genre of music called Afrobeat, combining funk, jazz, and West African rhythms, but that’s only half of the story. The other half is what his music stood for. Today we’re diving into the music and world of Fela Kuti, and we’ll see how he created some of the best music ever made, gave hope to people for generations, and nearly toppled a dictatorship.

Thanks to Jad Abumrad for chatting with me. Go check out his podcast “Fela Kuti: Fear No Man” wherever you listen to podcasts! https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/fela-kuti-fear-no-man/id1835735529

This vid fixed my gripe about the background audio on the phone being too loud and distracting from the main video. It still syncs a bit behind, I have to click > about 5 times to get it synced enough. Very immersive!

    What?
I’m goons have to pause this until later. Fela is one of my all time favourite artists. Despite being distasteful in many ways. I’ve used his tracks to buy audio equipment for decades. You must move to this shit.

    Hey!
Liked a lot the format. Thanks!
It worked well with QR code, but the syncing was not easy.
The times when you asked for "yes" helped with the syncing. Perhaps there should be more of those "tips", perhaps with countdowns or time stamps.
    Cheers!

What a cool and innovative, interactive experience. I'm glad I had to the time to sit down for this one as intended. I already love the channel and videos and the Dual Screen Auto Sync worked perfectly and took it to the next level.
Can music change the world? Yes!
    Thank you,
    Valinet

sorry – not a fan of a dual device thing. i need to wear headphones – having my speakers on and my phone listening and also playing sound, isnt going to work for me.
I would prefer if you could just release the track thats meant to be played on my phone as another youtube video – im ok with switching to different videos in different tabs and manually seeking – as long as i can do it all with headphones, im good 👍

The background music on the phone while you are talking on youtube is very confusing and distracting at first (getting used to it right now, I’m typing this while watching). Also was asked to open with Podcast on my iPhone and all kind of cookies (I’m from the EU). Also didn’t understand which button on the phone to click: “Fela Kuti Companion Video”, “Join diggingthegreats” or the “Listen to Fela Kuti track x”. It’s working now but I didn’t understand any of it. Watching 2 screens does not feel natural either. Great idea but a little bit to complicated…

Bruh! This is the dopest thing I’ve ever seen on youtube!
So much more I could say about the actual content, but for now I just wanna go off about how cool this dual screen thing really did turn out!! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

Love the way you've been experimenting with the dual video option, and it's always such a fun and immersive experience. That being said, you always introduce it as watching on your tv/computer and a companion "phone", but it works just as great in two side-by-side windows on a computer! Keeps me from reaching for my phone, and the sync and everything works great on the same device. Volume matching has been solid, too, neither has been too loud or soft when played from the same device. Cheers!

First time trying it, it did work HOWEVER… on the sync instructions, you still have guidance to select the alternate audio (which is not needed for this one… not to mention the language choice from the prior versions isn't even an option on this one). Can be a bit confusing. You might want to change that first direction accordingly. Otherwise, nice job!
