How Elites Rigged Global Trade To Make You Poor
President Donald Trump’s chaotic tariff fiasco angered everyone from Democrats to Trump’s billionaire friends. Now some people are suggesting that we go back to free trade. They’re all wrong. Tariffs can help build a more fair and just economy — but not the way Trump is using them.

More Perfect Union’s mission is to build power for working people. Here’s what that means:
We report on the real struggles and challenges of the working class from a working-class perspective, and we attempt to connect those problems to potential solutions.
We report on the abuses and wrongdoing of corporate power, and we seek to hold accountable the ultra-rich who have too much power over America’s political and economic systems.

It seems as if tariffs are less useful when everyone is tarriffed to where they can't be used as leverage if they are already tarrifed

This is an oversimplification that ignores technological advances and the negative sides of tariffs, ala how it added to the economic downturn that eventually got its name 1930 and so on. Tariff hampers trade, increased trade creates wealth, reduced trade lowers it. One can talk all day about how total future created wealth should be distributed, but the solution to inequality is not to lower wealth creation. Why does USA need to make trucks if it is cheaper to import them. Why cant USA than import the trucks at a reduced cost and do something else instead to increase their wealth. Which they overall do, but because of the size of the economy going past the global supply of gold. Meaning it was the correct response to go over to fiat currency in the 1970s. What one forgot in USA is that you need unions to compensate worker leverage when stable inflation is introduced to the money supply.

Very one sided voodo economics. Tariffs and subsidies are not bringing back industries or jobs. They only raise prices on consumers and lead to less efficient production and technology. An american steel company will produce much more expensive steel and wont be able to sell it on foreign markets, because its not competitive. You end up in a situation where the government continuously subsidizes inefficient and less profitable industries and jobs like in East Germany, soviet union, … The solution would have been to better distribute the gains of free trade and support the transformation of industries, invest in education, infrastructure … The US did none of those and rewarded the ultra wealthy

In order to achieve cooperation countries that do not cooperate have to be punished.
Team blue is too nice and it is a problem. Team red is aggressive and that is easier to plan around.

Everybody knows I think he's pushing tariffs because he won't tax the rich, won't eliminate tax shelters which is the biggest loss of revenue. And since Congress won't limit spending and the FED sells bonds for income a 6% to the fed, the debt continues to rise destroying The US economy with inflation and destroying the world's trust in the US. Mho.

It's the problem in the first place!

You have to find what you are good at. What is the point of subsidicing steel production in Pittsburgh if you can buy the same steel for 60% of the cost? Find something you do 20% better or cheaper then everyone else. Taiwan and semiconductors is an example. They subsidised the shit out of that for decades. Which country is going to take all those jobs in the near fuutre? Noone becuase it is too difficult. I think traiffs in hope to bring back jobs others do better and cheaper is stupid, but there can be other reasons like security with batteries.
Need to find something new the US do better then everyone else rather then looking back at steel, coal, cars etc.

Also think about all the income taxes lost with those 15000 jobs. Then, think about the likely conversion of a working, tax paying citizen, into a Social security recipient and/or drug user. Not only did you lose the tax revenue, the government incurred higher "entitlement" program costs. Nobody ever computes that. Free trade also uses more fuel, contributing to global warming.

PKAY EVERYONE PAY ATTENTION: THROUGHOUT HISTORY ITS BEEN NECESSARY TO HAVE THE POPULATION IMPOVERISHED BEFORE A DICTATOR CAN TAKE OVER. Same in every country around the world. If we are worried about survival, we don't have the resources to fight our government. There will be no more elections if Trump has his way.
