We’ve heard them in movies for decades, but of course we don’t know what they sounded like in real life. But we do have some educated guesses, and today we’re going to look at the theories behind dinosaur sounds, what they sounded (or felt) like, and ponder the likelihood that maybe some of these guys could even talk.

Jurassic Park's velociraptors aren't velociraptors. They're based on a completely different dinosaur, Deinonychus. Michael Crichton chose to use velociraptor because it was more dramatic. Velociraptors were actually covered in feathers and about the size of a turkey. Deinonychus grew much larger, actually about the size of humans. It's actually a myth that it was based on utahraptor, because Utahraptor was discovered in 1991 only after Michael Crichton wrote it.

    1. Feathered velociraptors look like they belong in The Dark Crystal – not really "primal scary" so much as "80s acid trip-based children's movie" scary.

    2. You should check out the video that another acoustic science YT channel did on Godzilla. The audio is absolutely harrowing. I mean, it literally instills a primal sensation of dread. Best experienced with headphones.

The T-Rex plausibly roared at the kids out of frustration, like a dog barking when its ball is stuck under a sofa.

Predators do sometimes make aggressive sounds at prey to startle them out of hiding.

What gets me about the dinosaur vocal recreation at 13:08 is that it straight up just sounds like a Colin Stetson song without his crazy saxophone instrumentation. Could make some fire ambient drone or whatever using that thing.
