This feels like it's an allegory for something but I'm not quite sure what, but the creator didn't intend for that at all, but like you could interpret it that way if you really felt like doing so

Joel's callous nature disgusts me. Not only does he sacrifice innocent lives to the summoning of his scrumptious meals but outright rejects the notion of atonement for his heinous deeds by drinking the yucky drink. Instead he washes away his guilt by indulging in the sweet temptation of his platter, even convincing his associate to do the same. A cruel spirit it must have been, who granted him such power.
