How a warmer Arctic could intensify extreme weather
Is there a link between the vanishing Arctic sea ice and extreme weather?
Some prominent climate researchers think so. That’s because warming temperatures in the Arctic are altering the behavior of the polar jet stream, a high-altitude river of air that drives weather patterns across the globe. As the winds that propel the jet stream weaken, storms, droughts, and extreme heat and cold move over continents at slower rates, meaning bad weather can stick around for longer.
Eli Kintisch reports aboard the Norwegian research vessel Helmer Hanssen about how changing conditions at the top of the world could be impacting weather far away.

The late December 2017 and early January 2018 weather pattern was interesting! I remember how cold it was in NJ. The temperature was below 25°F for almost 3 weeks. Plus we had that extratropical cyclone that had well defined eye and brought a half foot of snow to NJ according to NOAA.
I was in 6th grade at the time. Good times!

Warm arctic/cold eastern US. So when Nunavut is warm, New England will be cold. What about the bits between the 2 regions like Quebec? Or when you say Arctic do you really mean Yukon and Alaska?

This is incorrect data. Gravity is not affecting the jet stream. The ice melting in the artic allows water to absorb more sunlight, which heats the water, thus the air, and with more warm air, more high pressure air is mixed into the flow and it augments by pushing the cold air towards the warm equator by the path of least resistance in the form of by way of the warmth escaping down the Rockies, and cold seeping out via the Great Lakes.

Jet Streams Weakened Allows Polar Vortex Further South
