So primary director of the 1974 Texas chainsaw massacre, Tobe hooper, did base Leatherface partially off ed gein as he had family that lived around plain field Wisconsin, he primarily based off a story Tobe hooper was told as a child from his doctor, that the doctor once wore a skinned cadaver's face to a Halloween party. And Leatherface just becomes the mask, the mask is his identity. And elhmer wayne Henley was most likely baked into the cooks personality, neither Leatherface or the hitchhiker care about doing anything right. And both the hitchhiker and leatherface based the personality of there characters from real mentally ill people the actors had seen in there own lives, the hitchhiker being based off ed neils brother who had schizophrenia, and gunnar Hansen based Leatherface off the mentally slow(Leatherface was originally gonna have speaking parts, but gunnar suggested it would take away from the character, and Tobe hooper agreed)

The creepiest and in my opinion, the saddest part of Gein’s story, is while almost the entire house had Human skin/bone/limb based “decor”, the one room that didnt have a single horrific thing? His mother’s room. Infact his mother’s room was the cleanest and most well cared for. He often dusted, kept the bed neatly made and made sure nothing from his crimes even went NEAR that room…Gein was insane and violent, yes, but deep down he adored his mother so much he refused to let the last thing he had of his mother’s touch anything from his crimes….i believe deep down he knew what he was truly doing and had a sense of shame to the point he didn’t want what was left of his moms stuff to “see” what he was doing, like a child hiding a broken vase so their mom wont get angry or disappointed…dont get me wrong, im not saying what he did wasnt horrifying, it absolutely was, but i do think there was a part if him deep deep down that also knew “this is bad, i shouldnt be doing this, mama wouldnt like this”
