Corey refused to enter the plea because without doing so his trial couldn't move forward. Those who were found guilty not only faced execution by hanging but their property was also forfeited to the Colony. Typically what happened was ones neighbors could absorb ones land as the Court would sell it off rather cheaply. Corey knew this and knew if he either plead guilty or was found guilty his sons would lose their claim on his land.
Whether or not he said the words "more weight" or it was the invention of Arthur Miller in his play "The Crucible" is unknown.
Pressing was standard procedure for contempt of Court for centuries.
