Join me in a journey into hip hop lore to discuss one of hip hop’s forgotten legends lost in time. He’s a rapper that barely anyone remembers but for a moment in the mid 90s he was considered to be one of the rappers that would lead hip hop into the next generation. Why was he so hyped and why does nobody remember him, and how is his legacy so important in the first place?

This vid got me thinking about Keith Murray and how much I loved his early work. I know he had legal/other issues, but something about his falloff still seems wrong to me. His 3 year sentence for that fight makes no sense either. I don't know if there's enough there to justify making a video, just thinking out loud.

Daaaaamn, Canibus – haven't really thought about him since Vast Aire of Cannibal Ox brought him back 2001 on Real Earth: I'm the voice in LL's head saying "you let a weed plant do that?" Me and and the other lyrical-miracle-nerds laughed so hard at that. To be honest, we also didn't rock with dude much prior either,m because we all were huge Keith Murray fans, unsure whether Canibus was bitin or not. Great video as always, my man.

I agree with you that new hip hop is trash. Thats why im glad the focus is shifting with the help of Kendrick. Thats also why I rap the way I rap, I wanna show real talent, not making songs literally anybody can make😂

He is/was intelligent in his delivery but under the wrong circumstances/ environments he placed himself… he did follow his own direction just trailblazed others instead of creating his own really unique path… self-esteem can steam/ stream self-destruction like da LL incident, of which he set his own trap playing Hip Hop GOD (suppose 2 know but unknowin* the mathematics b4 enterin* da era/terroradom) of Hip Hop…🤔🧐🤓💡🧠🤦🏾♂️

There is a poor take in my view, that the change in the mid to late 90s was hip hop maturing. I see it as the beginning of the decay and the use of Canibus a representative example is mistaken. Canibus was always an outlier, this does not explain why groups like ATCQ, the Roots, Common, Mosdef & Talib Kweli etc went out of fashion and why we have the type of hip hop we have today.

Canibus was definitely known in NY circles , been in WNY , Buffalo area my whole life we rocked with him heavy, but just got outshined by the mainstream like you said , great vid

Yeah, Canibus has ADHD. I can tell because I have it and he shows a lot of traits that I have when it comes to mannerisms and body movement (namely not able to sit still). Also him being Lazer focused on stuff he is interested in is also a huge sign of the disorder.

He's absolutely right. CanIbus should have been one of the greatest out there. I blame Wyclef Jean en-fcking- tirely for Canibus' failed debut. I can't explain the success of The Score as I really thought it was overrated. And honestly I've never liked Wyclef's sound post Nappyheadz. I mean can you imagine Canibus on a Dilla or a Pete Rock collab. I would have said Primo but that Nas collab was so disappointing.

Canibus changed the way I listen to and enjoy hip hop forever. I used to discover artists just by looking for songs that Canibus featured on and they were all bangers. Killin’ shit like a militant prehistoric monster, comin’ to stomp all over your hip hop conference
